I'd always wanted to be in the police as a kid, and a friend of mine is a Special in the Lancs Constab and him talking about it all the time has persuaded me to apply myself, in North Yorkshire! I thought I'd introduce myself and ask a few questions. I'm an Army Reservist at present, I understand that this isn't a restricted occupation, however I've heard that military commitment "takes priority"... what does that mean? I ask mainly because I have military training throughout the whole of September and that's when the North Yorks familiarisation events take place, so I won't be able to attend any of them - is an exception likely to be made, or another arrangement wh…

Hi everyone. Hope I can get some help, I've just found this forum and therefore I believe you could answer my questions! I'm 26 and a mum of 1 moving to Corby (Northamptonshire) next month. I've been working for NHS for the past 5 years and I want to make a move and go into policing. I've checked about becoming a volunteer support officer even if is just 6 hours a week so I can at least have an idea of what is it to be in the police world and gain experience which I think it will be a plus for the interviews etc My question is: where do I start? I will need to have my full driving licence next month due to the new job, so that was one of things of 'must have in the req…

So I was reading ''The Job '' and this is on the cover.... I don't mean to be rude or anything but to be honest on the construction site that I worked I've seen laborers dressed a lot better and smarter than ''London's Finest''. No seriously what's up with the scruffy look?

Hi all. Firstly I'd like to thank everyone for their comments, ideas and by replying. I was successful with Essex police and now I'm waiting for my start date. From what I read here it seems that I will have to provide mu own boots. I looked online and decided that Altbergs are for me. What do you recommend for a newbie like me? And also I strongly consider that if I study a little beforehand it will greatly help me pass the exams and in the learning process. What are your thoughts on this? And what shall I study? I have looked at the ckp course contents and was thinking of starting with that. Do you guys know some useful websites that might help me with this? Tha…

Hi Everyone, I am a police officer coming through the specials process at the moment (I have been accepted and start training in November) 1) I currently only hold a Full Manual Licence. Am I going to be more attractive to the police regulars if i undertake special driving courses or broaden the vehicles i'm able to drive for example maybe getting my Motorbike licence or undertaking a ROSPA advance driving course? 2) As someone with medical knowledge I could carry extra items and responded to medical emergencies as well. Would this knowledge put me 'ahead in the queue when it comes to driving with the police as you are more useful, if you get what i'm sa…

Hello there, I hope non-police are welcome here...if not I'll quietly leave:-) Anyway I have a query & I was wondering if someone could help me with it? I currently hold a FAC...& its up for renewal in a few months time. My force [South Wales Police] is taking a hard line on any non-disclosed convictions...which as you probably know includes old driving convictions. I ordered a PNC check [which came back clean] but it did not mention any old driving convictions. I know I had a speeding ticket sometime in the 80s & possibly a driving without care & attention around the same time. I cannot for the life of me remember whether I had a verbal war…

Hello everyone, I’m set to graduate from the Police Cadets in Mid September and would like to get a few gifts for the instructors for volunteering their own time to help us where possible with the tasks and events we’ve conducted throughout the year. I was thinking of keeping it ‘Police Related’ gifts but general gifts that you believe would benefit them in some way whilst on the job would also be welcome! Look forward to reading some of the ideas Thanks, CPCH999

Any PCs out there with second jobs? Looking to see what jobs there might be compatible to fit in with being a copper. I could just do overtime but it's unreliable and finding the job very tedious at the moment looking to just do something else.

https://www.cheshire.police.uk/advice-and-support/roads-and-vehicle-safety/submit-dashcam-footage/?utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=SocialSignIn&utm_source=Twitter Noticed this on the Twitter feed regarding a new system for members of the public to upload footage of traffic offences. It got me thinking, is this a good thing or will it lead to members of the public being disappointed with lack of prosecutions, investigations etc? I am the first to get annoyed at the standards of driving on the roads at the moment but if we are being realistic is there the time or resources to follow this up? Of course with clearly dangerous driving then yes I can see…

Hello all, I'm not a serving officer, but I believe that PCs generally work either Neighbourhood policing or Response now, at least in GMP, if not all over the UK? I wondered which role most PCs choose, response or neighbourhood? I know this will be a personal choice dependant upon a number of factors but I wondered if there was more competition for one over the other? As I understand it, response officers cover the 24hr period whereas neighbourhood officers cover 07.00-00.00 (no shifts between 00.00 and 07.00).

Hi All, What are your thoughts on specials being tied to a particular patrol team? Where I'm based we are not allowed to go out with a different team. There are 5 teams, A-E, which rotate round on a 2Early,2Late, 2Night, 4 rest day rota. It causes quite a lot of grief with the non 'ranked' specials, who think it's rather unfair and massively restricts when they can go out. The regular supervision don't enforce it, and all reg sgts I've spoken to seem to want the extra support. However the special supervision are insistent that we must follow their rules/orders. For me, who works Monday-Friday 9-5, I can rarely go in, but if I was allowed in every Friday la…

I'm interested in people's experiences undertaking their force's standard response course (as per CoP) From personal experience, what are the course failure rates in your force? How long is your course? How long ago did you do it?
