General Policing Discussions

Hi, A few years ago I came on here as a 15 year old asking whether I should join the regulars straight out of school or join the specials and do a law degree at the same time. Now 17 and going through the application process for the specials and sitting with an unconditional for law next year. I passed my SET and Fitness test yesterday and have my interview on the 3rd November. Does anyone have any hints and tips for the interview? Cheers, CameronS999

I have just finished reading Lethal Force: My Life As the Met's Most Controversial Marksman and found it really interesting and enjoyed it. It has got me wondering what other police related books are out there that you've read and would recommend?

I just read a case on the police oracle website about a man knocking a police constable's teeth out he got less than 1 year in prison and asked to pay 500£ to the constable. I think this is ridiculous, as a police officer can you not go to a lawyer firm and sue him just like any regular citizen? I mean if I work as a postman and some drunk idiot assaults me I'm going to take him to court and make him pay, no matter what the police decide, why don't the police officers do the same? There are plenty of solicitor firms that do not charge you anything unless you win the case and then they take a %, are you not allowed as a police officer to do this?

Hi, i'm not even in the met yet, hopefully will start training in a couple months. I've long wanted to work in the CID after a few years of being in uniform, but after reading stories and things on here, it seems people only have bad things to say about the work. So i'd just like to ask, is it so bad? Can you list the honest Pro's and Con's? Just thinking about the future, i know i'm thinking way ahead but i like to plan and have future aims, obviously this could change if i really enjoy the uniform, etc, but i'm just curious. Right you fantastic bunch. I've been testing the waters with a few posts but here's the kicker. Last week my wife and I lost our baby girl 18 weeks into my wife's pregnancy. Since then I've lost all motivation to do my ckp course and to exercise. So I dunno what I need maybe a kick up the ass or a hug or a shift drink. Hello all, I'm currently not in any force nor gone through any training therefore I have a question to ask referring to the training of a regular PC/Special/PCSO Suicide is a major problem throughout the UK so I'm sure there are many calls regarding this. My question is: Throughout the training process, is any basic training given for when officers may have to encounter people who are suicidal? If the answer is yes, I'd appreciate if you could enlighten me to some examples of what you may have to do. Thanks in advance

Hi. My question is aimed specifically at officers and specials that are in the force already. When you begin a relationship with someone and then move in with them, I understand there would need to be some vetting done on the new partner (and family) at some point. I am that new partner and I was arrested about 10 years ago, questioned and then that was the end of it. Due to the nature of the accusation made against me, I don't like to tell people about it for fear of being judged anyway and subsequently my partner currently does not know. How and when you decide to tell your partner this, I don't know but my question is about the new partner vetting procedure. I abs…

Afternoon, Just wanted to get an idea on how people view ESP (Employer Supported) Policing within the Special Constabulary? and also what people feel are the pros and cons. I can see the benefits for employers such as BTP who encourage their police staff to take part and offer them the opportunity to work 8 hours per month of their full time role out on the streets as a Special as well as any training required. It allows staff to see both sides of the coin but also gives BTP a larger number of officers to use when needed. Opinions please.............

Hi all, currently in the recruitment process at the grand old age of 42. How old were you when you joined? I don't see age as a barrier but just wondered what age you were.

Just thought I would see what people's reactions to my query would be. I am currently in the process with a police force and have my final interview coming up. in the meantime I have been thinking could I not apply to another force in the meantime and transfer my AC score across as a backup incase I didn't pass my final interview and also to make the most out of my score? it is always nice to have a backup especially when you are desperate to join ha!
