(Private Eye magazine) An ex-Army cadet Stephen Menary was injured by an IRA booby-trap bomb in west London. He lost his sight, an ear, an arm & sustained chest & stomach imnjuries in the blast. After a 7½ year battle, the Criminal Injuries Compensation Agency (CICA) has finally agreed to pay him the maximum amount of £500,000 - almost double its original offer. The CICA tried to pay out as little as it could, £270,306, reasoning that as he had already been blind in one eye, because of a rare cancer he'd had in childhood, they only need pay him for the loss of his other eye, rather than the blindness that he has to deal with now. It further reduced co…

(London Metro newspaper 05/11/08) Polish workers returning to their homeland are being given master classes by their government in how to keep receiving British state benefits. Under EU rules, they can receive benefits of up to £60.50p per week for three months are they go home, rather than the £30 the Polish system pays, provided they have paid National Insurance contributions here for at least two years. The Department for Works and Pensions says that British citizens are eligible for the same sort of help from other EU member states they've worked in. Yeah, right. I can see that happening.Graham2008-11-06 02:25:18

Nominations please! Lugworm inspired me yesterday to start this. Many of us on this forum exhibit cynicism. (Shrink might call it part of the Police Personality. ) To the extent that I think we should have a Cynic of the Week, with this label beneatth their username until the new Cynic of the Week is selected. So, I'd like nominations please. For this, please can you link to the appropriate thread and quote and copy the post to here. I'll do an example in a moment... which is fortuitous. Closing date for nominations is 7th November, after which the Moderators will pick the cynic of the week. There's no prize, I'm afraid.

(Private Eye magazine) The government's habit of dumping on future generations through schemes such as the Private Finance Initiative generally involves deferring £billions in expenditure for a decade or so. In one cas it has extended to taking serious amounts of money. The latest accounts of the Department for Business, Environment & Regulatory Reform (BERR) reveal that, in the last two years, the Treasury has received £1 billion from the Coal Board pension fund. The payments arise from an arrangement under which the government - until 1994 the owner of British Coal - receives half the scheme's surpluses, in return for a state guarantee that the ex-miner…

A friend and I had a debate about a possible needle exchange program in our prison system, and I was wondering what everyone here thought of the idea? The program would make sure inmates had clean gear for shooting and proper tools for tattooing. Are you for it or against it?

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1051124/The-loyal-Gurkha-whos-refused-medical-treatment-Britain--afford-500-visa-fee.html This is how NuLabour treat people. They can afford to give 225 million to the Palastinians, 200 million to India and 50 million to China, but will not waive the visa fee for this old soldier. Almost makes you ashamed to be British.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/7708654.stm Another victory for common sense. It's time someone took a long look at Newham Social Services, which is controlled by some 'looney lefties'. I can just imagine Kim Bromley-Derry sitting on her 'bean bag' in middle of her office pontificating with her own out dated views. The Judge obviously sussed them out with his scathing comments about them. Does having a double-barrelled name make them more important, or are they just snobs and like to be different.Maverick222008-11-06 16:41:17

A while ago I started a thread asking for support in petitioning our "esteemed" premier to forward the veteran entertainer Bruce Fosyth's name for a knighthood in recognition of his more than fifty years in showbusiness. The PM's office sent an e-mailed response on this Wednesday gone, and here it is:- You signed a petition asking the Prime Minister to "Give Mr Bruce Forsyth a Knighthood." The Prime Minister's Office has responded to that petition and you can view it here: http://www.number10.gov.uk/Page17311 Prime Minister's Office Petition information - http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/Knightbrucie/ ................................
