Smart Thermostats

So I've been contemplating getting a smart thermostat fitted but which one should I go for? The choices are really only between Hive and Nest and both seem to have their plus and minus points. Anyone got any advice? Anyone got either of these and if so what do you think? All opinions appreciated. Cheers

I suppose as I don't have a cleaner this is DIY really. I need a new vacuum and I am considering a GTech Airram. Has anyone got any experience of one or any advice to give? Happy to read any other recommendations or experiences. Suck away...I mean...fire away.

Sick and tired of cutting the grass. It's uneven and patchy, doesn't grow under the trees, has lots of weeds and lots of moss, basiclly it looks nothing like Wimbledon. I'm considering an artificial lawn and I'm wondering if anybody has any experience of them and any advice they can offer.

Garage roof insulation

Afternoon, I'd like to insulate roof in the garage. I know already that I have to look at cold roof solution. I know that there should be ventilation between roof board (wooden board with felt on top) and insulation. But I cannot have any ventilation in between, as beams are done across the garage (if it makes sense). So my question is - shall I just buy some polystyrene and stick it on the wooden board from the bottom - or should I pack cavity with wool and stick plasterboard. This would make sandwich - roof board/insulation/plasterboard Last thing which I want is to do something wrong, have condensation problem, which would lead to rotten roof. I will upload som…

Home Security advice 1 2

Not light hearted, but I didn't really know where else to stick it, anyway my parents house, well more the drive has seen two attempted thefts in as many months. I'm looking for some advice regarding security measures. Naturally I know the basics, but I'm hoping for some good advice from you guys. They have security lights and sensors and decent doors and windows and the house does have an alarm, but the drive way is well, just a drive way. The first thing is CCTV, I've no experience in buying and using from the other side. Any advice even if it seams patronising would be good. Even if it's just brands to avoid, or to avoid it altogether. I know it won't help physical…

Help: Flooring choices 1 2

Folks, I need some help with choosing flooring for a room that I recently painted. I don't whether to go with carpet or laminate but what is more important is its colour. The ceiling is white, walls are light grey, the bedding, blind and lampshade is medium-ish blue. So the colour scheme is grey and blue. Now, for a carpet I was thinking of a dark grey or blue but interior design isn't my strong point so I need some help. I have no idea about laminate colours. Any help is much appreciated.

Okay, I'll keep it brief. New strange bit of witchcraft in the house, apparently it does some kinda magic after pressing a few buttons... Though it is better than the old one as you don't need a degree in engineering and be proficient at flying an aircraft to get it to work and be on the right setting! only thing is... even at a low RPM it really does not like me and I have to make sure it doesn't make a bit for freedom... Floor is level as floors generally are and the little spinny legs on the front are even. Even at 600RPM it likes to play a game and try to run away or likes to knock seven shades out of the adjacent kitchen unit.... any ideas???

Household Filing System - what do you do?
by prolixia- 7 followers

Pretty boring topic, but do you have an effective solution for filing household documents? The pile of assorted documents on my desk has again reached the height that requires me to sort through it to decide which documents to bin, which ones to keep and which ones to action (late). I can't help but think that there is maybe a better way. Do you have a simple system that keeps things organised and doesn't just bloat with receipts for things that broke years ago? If so, please share!

new door

Been looking around and can't really price online but here's the scenario. External door into garden from a shed / side passage, old door is a bit worse for wear. I'm going to replace it soon, does anyone know how much a new door and frame could cost (fitted too. doesn't have to be 'double glazed' / UPVC but probably a little more resilient than your average 'z-frame' door. Also can you get external doors to open the wrong way round? (so it could open into the exterior) making it easier to get bikes etc out of a relatively small space. strange question but I gave up looking at DIY sites and thought maybe someone here may know.

Does any have any experience with home safes e.g. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Yale-Locks-YVSS-Small-Value/dp/B006XBSPF2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1417381992&sr=8-1&keywords=safe Do you have one? Where have you put it? Did you bolt it down? Any recommendations? It's been suggested that I get one for the odd times I have to bring kit (e.g. airwaves) back with me to parade at different locations, but I think it'd be good for the passports etc. too. Please and thank you
