Management Chief Cheetah 6,902 Posted December 4, 2017 Management Share Posted December 4, 2017 So I've been contemplating getting a smart thermostat fitted but which one should I go for? The choices are really only between Hive and Nest and both seem to have their plus and minus points. Anyone got any advice? Anyone got either of these and if so what do you think? All opinions appreciated. Cheers
Mac7 808
I’m also contemplating one. Do you think they are worth it (I.e do they save you money) or are the a gimmick?
Beaker 817
We used to support Hive where I work. I won't have a hive thermostat as a result, and even the Hive SPOC bought Nest. We didn't like it much. I do have some hive bulbs I got free from BG as well, but as you can't link them together they're back in the box because I've currently no use for them. Go Nest, it breaks less.

I switch my heating off at the boiler when I'm going out and otherwise it is on a timer. I think I just like the idea of being able to work it from my mobile especially when I am out and have forgotten to switch it off or I want it to come on as I'm coming home. 13 minutes ago, Beaker said: We used to support Hive where I work. I was more siding toward the Nest, I think it has a bit more controllability and functionality than the Hive. I'm not bothered about all the linked products, some day I'll have Alexa/Cortana/Siri/Google Assist to do that for me.
XA84 + 434
I recently had my old and aging boiler replaced and when the boiler man came round he offered me a discount on a British Gas Hive smart kit. The kit I was given doesn't have the monthly/annual payment with it, it was just a one off payment. From what I can tell the monthly/annual payment is to allow mobile phone connectivity which mine doesn't have although having said that I find that the kit is brilliant without it. You can set heating schedules up from Monday to Sunday, it has manual mode where you control it, or place it in holiday mode where it will use the bare minimum power and gas to keep your pipes warm in the winter months so that they don't freeze over. Everything can be controlled by it's LCD screen or via buttons on the Hive. I tend to carry it around with me when I go downstairs or when I'm working in my office cause I can turn the heat up or down at my pleasure or set it to run heating or water for an hour or more although it can also be fixed to a wall of your choice. The boiler man just connects a bluetooth piece of kit next to the boiler then feeds it in to the boiler directly.
Techie1 + 2,024
I think you should have a look at Honeywell too. https://getconnected.honeywell.com/en/our-thermostats?gclid=Cj0KCQiAgZTRBRDmARIsAJvVWAs1g-O54S0X7v9G-pwnpUwJLG_SU_nCbD5dBPJGI8BfNkPe9PLfvXcaAqrFEALw_wcB

You can marry them up with other stuff without much effort. Nest is similar there.
