A care home where elderly Christian residents refused to answer ‘intrusive’ questions about their sexuality is at the centre of a bitter legal battle after its council grant was axed. Brighton & Hove Council told the home to ask pensioners four times a year about their sexual orientation under its ‘fair access and diversity’ policies, which stem from New Labour equality laws. Council chiefs also accused the charity that runs the home of ‘institutional discrimination’, before cutting a £13,000 grant towards warden services. Andrew Jessop, the charity’s chief executive, said: ‘The council has taken overzealousness to the extreme. People in their 90s are very vulnerabl…

This is what M&MBM says in his/her post in the 'Moderation' thread... <?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> "Perhaps in future if people disagree with something I've done, or think I'm being power-happy or unfair, they can PM me" And this is the out-of-public-eyes response you get when you do... "you are not welcome" "That is our judgment, not yours. Yours does not count." "You either submit or you go". "You were not submitting to moderation so you were suspended. End of story". (Note from thefozman: not my bold or massive text) Now I know I w…

Recently a couple of things have come to my notice: 1. Recently my brother was taking my mother to hospital for a check up, and on the way needed to answer a call of nature. He stopped in a side street, (no public toilets around - service stations often don't have them), and had little alternative but to use the gutter. Fortunately no officers of the law about. He continued with his journey. 2. A friend of a friend was walking home in a large town when he found himself in a similar situation. He made himself as discreet as possible and relieved himself. Ooops - 2 police officers took him to task and gave him a ticket for an £80 fine. I suppose it was for disorder. My…

You know what it's like, all the seats are full and the hordes are trying to sit on your lap, here is a sure fire way to ensure you get the seat all to yourself. If the person in the next seat is boring the tits off you, simply get your laptop out and let him see this

As you may or may not know, the affectionate name for a female police officer is Dorris.... I have been told, that this is reference to the first ever WPC in the met, I am not convinced that this is true and I am wondering if anyone has any idea where the term originates from ?? Thanks Ian,

This year has been the ultimate in highs and lows, both at home and at work. A time for reflection of what is important in life, what the future holds and the challenges that have been completed and those that will raise their heads in the year to come. Working every day this festive season makes you think about those genuine people that will need the help of 999 staff, wishing everyone and their loved ones all the very very best, safe year to come. Sorry about seeming very self indulgent, pompous or patronising but recent events have made me really re-assess my priorities and I genuinely think it is a good thing to be geniuine, h…

The question is, for how long can you sit and watch this before, either puking or being forced to switch it off? So before watching this, please take a precise note of the time. My time 1 min 24 seconds. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=PaNoRnvFv58

An interesting and thought-provoking article by Henry Porter in today's Guardian in which he contrasts the dismantling of the non-democratic, authoritarian surveillance state in the Czech Republic with the emergence of that kind of state in the UK. Any comments? Brutus

Hi There... I am a police officer with the South Australia Police (SAPOL) and I am hoping that I might be able to help someone with a temporary place to stay for someone in the next UK recruitment course in Adelaide, Australia ... Just while you sort out something more permanent out or for the duration of the academy course... I live in a fully furnished 3 bedroom house on my own (oopps, with my dog) in a suburb called Henley Beach South. My house is nothing fancy but there is plenty of room; the location is awesome. One minute walk to the beauiful beach and only 10-15 drive to the police academy and my rent is very reasonable. I could possibly accommodate one person,…

When did you all stop believing in santa? I was on the phone to my sister earlier, who was telling me that my nephew is convinced that santa exists - he is 11. She has not defended his existance at all and has been quietly hoping that he would have discovered the horrible truth before now. Maybe he has the Christmas spirit that alot of us forgot long ago. So when did everybody stop believing, I cant remember ever believing but I must have at some point.
