Only days after computer giant IBM announced it can now cram 100 times more songs into an mp3 player, a little British team claims to have made a breakthrough that could see the capacity of an iPod increase up to 100,000 times. see here While the IBM "racetrack" memory relies on magnetising tiny tracks of material, clever chemists at Glasgow University have developed a molecular switch which means that data storage can be dramatically increased without the need to increase the size of microchips, which could be based on flexible plastics rather than rigid silicon chips. Prof Lee Cronin and Dr Malcolm Kadodwala's work, reported in the journal Nature Nanotechnology, wou…

Here's a question for ya... As a HGV C+E driver, I like to think I know most (but not all) things about the industry, but one answer to a certain question eludes me... On an artic lorry, there's the fifth wheel, which couples with the kingpin, together with the dog clip and realease bar. But WHY is it called a FIFTH WHEEL? Not one driver at our depot can give a definative answer, and the answers include : Its the fifth wheel on a 4x2 unit (but what about 6 legged units?) It takes a fifth of the GVW (weight is on the axles, not the kingpin) It was invented by a Mr Fifth (hmmmm... ) It was the fifth design patented (not sure about this one... possible?) Some one ev…

Met Police officers to be 'microchipped' by top brass in Big Brother style tracking scheme Met Chief Sir Ian Blair could be among 31,000 officers to receive the new electronic tracking device Every single Metropolitan police officer will be 'microchipped' so top brass can monitor their movements on a Big Brother style tracking scheme, it can be revealed today. According to respected industry magazine Police Review, the plan - which affects all 31,000 serving officers in the Met, including Sir Ian Blair - is set to replace the unreliable Airwave radio system currently used to help monitor officer's movements. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/arti...in_page_id=17…

On the DNA database discussion thread, talking about a Police State, Pen has remarked that it's not a police state so much as a terrible stae. There is a front page article in the independent yesterday which supports this. After 10 years of micromanagement and dictates from a government whose rhetoric included "Education, education, education," the political interferance has stopped our teachers teaching, prevented children learning and set back the quality of education for a generation. But then, it doesn't do to have free thinkers in a police state, does it? I wonder what a similar study regarding policing would reveal?

This arrived as a funny but I think it's all correct You Might Be a Copper if... You have the bladder capacity of five people. You have ever restrained someone and it was not a sexual experience. You believe that 75% of people are a waste of space. Your idea of a good time is an armed robbery at shift change. You call for a name check on anyone who is remotely friendly to you. Discussing dismemberment over dinner seems perfectly normal to you. You find humour in other peoples stupidity. You have your weekends off planned for a year. You believe the government should require a permit to reproduce. You believe that unspeakable evils will befall you if anyone says…

Sent by Harold Wilson to sort out Ian Smith in Rhodesia, and returned with a 'flea in his ear'. Smith told Wilson to send a man to do his dirty work, not a boy.

The suspect had been running in the same direction for some time. Had he not stopped he would have been right in front of the patrol car! The wheels don't look like they were sliding at the point of impact or immediately before. Was there any need for all that speed? Was there any need to drive directly towards a suspect when there was evidently a significant likelihood that his vehicle would lose control? Definitely some serious questions to be answered. I don't like the way that right leg bent on first impact... cringe

One and a half hours spent yesterday sitting in long queues from Juction 11 to 8 on M1. No matrix signs flashing, LONG DELAYS, so one does wonder if that corner of the earth exists at all. All i could do is watch the tacho pile on the hours spent on the road. The odd thing is, if there had been an incident on the motorway, say at junction 10 M1, the mtrix signs would have been flashing away from junction 16 of M6. So why due to these roadworks are no warning signs given out? Not even a 40 MPH flashing sign ,50 yards from when road slowed to a crawl, very strange.
