On the way home from work today, after a somewhat stressful day, I called in our market where I visited a confectionary that I know. His stall has been in existence since my parents were bairns, so that's the late 1920s/early 1930s and they sell all manner of old fashioned sweets that you certainly couldn't buy from a modern supermarket, like sherbert fountains, bulls' eyes, black jacks, dew drops, shrimps, sweet peanuts and flying saucers. He even has a jar of multi-coloured kali! I asked the confectionary if there was anything he couldn't get these days and he said he couldn't think of anything - except perhaps sweet cigarettes (in boxes) and the sweet chewing tobacc…

A woman driver is furious after police said she looked like a man. Short-haired Pauline Synnott, 59, was caught speeding and admitted it in a letter to cops. She expected a £60 fine and three penalty points for doing 52mph in a 40mph zone. But cops who looked at the speed camera photo were convinced the driver was a man. They wrote to Pauline’s partner Roy Watkins, 65, who owns the car, to confirm who was driving. A letter to him read: “From the copy of the photograph it appears that the driver was a male.†Roy, who has been with supermarket worker Pauline, of Gillingham, Kent, for 12 years, said: “It was definitely her driving. “I am fuming and Paul…

Why can't a woman boss be like a man? <?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> By Bryony Gordon Last Updated: 12:01am BST 25/09/2008 So now we know. Women don't much like women, and they certainly don't like working for them. Research published this week has found that females who have the misfortune to have a boss with breasts and a high-pitched voice are more likely to suffer from stress than those who answer to a strapping hunk of a man. Ladies who work for ladies suffer more from depression, headaches and insomnia. Well, obviously. Who wouldn't experience horrific, disturbing night terrors, knowing th…

The current domino effect in the world markets and the failure of Bush to get his $700 bn package through took 777 points off the Dow Jones today and that's another 7% down. Two more finance houses in the US are in the queue to fall. Confidence is at an all time low with Bradford & Bingley gone and Fortis ($871 billion concern) up the Swanee. The government will be pleading with us not to draw our £50 out next - a run on the banks? Anyone out there feeling optimistic?

Clicky. Let me explain, i am a smoker. Yes. Smoking kills. Yes, we all know that. We're ALL educated on the facts of smoking, but guess what? Some of us choose to do it, just like some of you choose to over-eat and some of you choose to over-drink. Life goes on. Now, i know smoking is 'stupid' and 'pointless' but it is an addiction and it's difficult to get out of, i personally want to quit next year as a New Years resoloution, but that's my choice. The labels with ridiculous quotes like 'Smoking Kills - Don't start' were bad enough, But putting "graphic" images on cigarette packets, i think that's borderline crazy. It's time people pull their heads out of their a**s…

Well I decided after beavering away most of the afternoon, to take a break this evening and watch a film, Giant (Liz Taylor, James Dean, and Rock Hudson) on TV. Before the film starts, there was a voice over disclaimer that some viewers may find the racial attitudes expressed in the film offensive. These attitudes are those of the producer and do not reflect the position of "station call letters." I was gobsmacked. Yes, some of the characters do say and do things to the Mexican characters in the film that are clearly racist. But the film is based on a great American novel. One of the reasons it is a great novel is that it accurately reflects the racial, soci…

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/2957428/Sharia-law-courts-operating-in-Britain.html Mr Siddiqi said that in a recent inheritance dispute handled by the court in Nuneaton, the estate of a Midlands man was divided between three daughters and two sons. The judges on the panel gave the sons twice as much as the daughters, in accordance with sharia. Had the family gone to a normal British court, the daughters would have got equal amounts. Could there be any problems with this?

After about two-weeks of suffering quite nasty abdominal and back pain, a doc at my local hospital examined me with ultra-sound and said I appear to have "irritable bowel" and handed me a prescription for some anti-spasmodic tablets. I felt a bit "fobbed-off" by this! I know very little about this condition and neither does my daughter (in spite of her studying medicine for 5-years at my considerable expense! ). Does anyone here suffer and have any tips as to what foods can bring it on and hence should be avoided? I confess I do love ultra-hot curries and ultra-stinky cheeses, but I'm not sure they are to blame. Can anyone recommend any alternative or herbal remedies …

A chippy boss is charging traffic wardens ten per cent more for meals — because they keep booking him. Steve Mawer, 54, said he has been unfairly ticketed fifty times behind his shop although he has a council parking permit. He has refused to pay the fines and is to face court. In the meantime, he has put up a sign offering a ten per cent discount to police and firemen but warning that traffic wardens must pay that much more and fork out £4.95 for fish, chips and peas. Steve said: “All the businesses around here get some real hassle from traffic wardens and we’re sick of it. “I must have had 50 tickets for parking on what is my own property around the b…
