The issue of the death penalty has been raised again in another thread, so I thought this might be worth a debate. The two questions illustrate opposing points of view. At first, the idea of hanging ten innocent people to enure that the guilty do not escape punishment seems quite barbaric. It does seem to have practical application though. Personally, while I approve of the death penalty in principle, and there is quite a list I would hang with a clear conscience, I would not like to quite literally bet my life on the judicial system being right every time.

Just popped in to say hello as it's my first day here. Normally I wouldn't touch an internet site with a barge pole......well, police related ones anyway! However, in order to celebrate the resignation of that idiot Blair, I've decided to pop in and have a look around. Expect fun, frolics and being asked, why are you typing when you can't spell? regards TJIF TJIF2008-10-03 22:30:54

Really Useful Road Signs 02-Sep-08 Signs written in local Norfolk dialect are amongst crazy road signs criticised today.... Drivers are being urged to cut their speed — by roadsigns written in their local dialect. Three boards with the traditional Norfolk phrase “Slow You Down” have been put up by the parish council at Wiveton. A spokesman said: “It works.” Meanwhile officials have been branded “barmy” for putting up a flashing 30mph warning — 50ft in front of a 40mph zone in Woking, Surrey. Warning Signs Police Oracle Comment: Perhaps you've been on holiday or on an overseas assignment and saw something that made you chuckle? We'd love …

I have just been told that cannibalism is too strong a theme for a short story. I also asked my agent if I could therefore get rid of the bodies in the pig field... but she says that's too strong too, especially for this particular magazine. Apparently I have a very macabre imagination. Anyway, that, and the trashing you all gave The Bill a while back, makes me wonder what a copper would like to read in the way of crime fiction. What do you like, dislike? How true to life should it be? Can it be? Where would you like the emphasis; home life, forensics, trials etc. Any thoughts would be very welcome.

At one time (say 20 years ago) it used tobe fashionable to supplement your diet with vitamins to make sure you're getting enough. But some vitamins, the fat soluble ones, can accumulate in the body and even become toxic. Vitamin A is toxic in high concentratins. Then a study looking to see if vitamin supplementation reduced the incidence of cancer actually showed the reverse. Though the results were preliminary, the research had to be stopped because it's not ethical to give -people a substance which may induce a disease. Now here's a BBC report which highlights some research which also raises concerns about Vitamin C actually protecting cancer cells from ch…

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/7645743.stm "Some see this as a pivotal moment. The political philosopher John Gray, who recently retired as a professor at the London School of Economics, wrote in the London paper The Observer: "Here is a historic geopolitical shift, in which the balance of power in the world is being altered irrevocably. "The era of American global leadership, reaching back to the Second World War, is over... The American free-market creed has self-destructed while countries that retained overall control of markets have been vindicated." "In a change as far-reaching in its implications as the fall of the Soviet Union, an entire mod…
