For years I have assumed that Community Punishment involved some element of poetic justice, like vandals having to clean up after themselves etc. But this, apparently, is a Pilot Scheme. About time too.

It occurred to me that many of us MOPS actually have very little idea about the various roles a copper (and related "Police family") have. Especially as this seems to keep changing. Not only that, there seems to be differences in the roles between forces. As a writer of crime fiction, I would have found it invaluable to know before I started writng, how the police work in general. Then I would have made fewer mistakes (trhough unfortunately you have to use a bit of literary licence for pace and tension.) Much of the Public's perception of what goes on is based on The Bill... and we've heard how inaccurate that is. It seems that The Thin Blue Line might…

'Why Not Train For A New Exciting Career' In recent years, there has been an increasing awareness and activism on the controversial issue of landmines. Horrific stories and pictures from all around the world show that it is mainly civilians who are the landmine casualties-and continue to be so years after the warring factions have left the battlefield (with the mines still there). 'Throughout 2010 the Mines Awareness Trust (MAT) will be running Mine Action and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) training courses in Kosovo. The courses are compliant to International Mine Action Standards (IMAS) and begin with the entry level Field Technical Advisor/ EOD Level 2 cours…

(Mr Ex-Speaker Lord 'Gorbals Micks' Martin's old seat) He will be a real boost to the campaign." A Labour source added: "We know that the by-election is going to be tight but we are up for the fight. Does anyone else dislike the stink of most wash powders nowadays? I have real difficulty in finding one which doesn't smell far too strongly and far too persistently. I don't want a podwer which makes things smell so persistently that I can tell which powder I used 6 months ago. I just want one which smells clean, but faintly. I got cheesed off with the swindling cheaty feeling I get when I buy Tesco's brand wash powder where every so often they tell us it's more concentrated and sell us a smaller box for the same price. (They must think we have short memories.) Trouble is, it's one of the few whose smell is tolerable. I just tried Daz and it's too str…
