Hello, I am considering going for the Specials with Greater Manchester Police- a couple of quick questions: I thought I read/heard somewhere that the training is two weeks long (but I can't find it anywhere)? I've read that you need to give 4hours a week (16 a month) but I have heard from someone that in practice the 4 regularly turns to 12. Is this true? Thank you for your help.

Hello PS! As a Special Constable, are you able to take all of your equipment (Obviously apart from the ASP and Pepper Spray) but equipment such as handcuffs, vest, radio (& charger?) home with you at all, or is it all kept in a locker at the station? Sorry if this sounds like such a ridiculous question, but hey, it's worth an ask! Cheers.

Reading the papers today. I noted the BHH is quoted as saying he believes the fitness test is at to low a standard. which begs the question of why bother having a test at all, if the pass standard is below the operational requirments About two years ago, at the instance of my doctor, I took up exerciser ( you will be dead in 5 years if you dont'' he said). I joined a gym and a fitness class were we did the bleep test. I achieved 5.5, which is above the pass level and I was an over weight 55 yo who chain smokes. The fact that there are apparently over 1000 police officers dealing with public safety who are less fit than I was is a bit scary I may need them to protect me …

Hi All, Our Force is pressing ahead with a change in Epaulettes, which displays the Officers Surname. Just wondering if any other Forces do this, if so do you identify them as a Special Constable Smith, or Constable Smith. Thanks in advance for other Forces views.

So, there has been a lot of talk recently about the Devolution of Manchester. Part of the extra powers and responsibilities the new Mayor will get is to do with policing affectivley taking over the PCC. I visited the GMP website last week and is said they are looking at recruiting 50 new student officers over the next 3 years but will not be giving any more information about it until March 2016. Looking again today that announcement has been taken down and replaced with:- 'Quote' Recruitment during 2014/15 has focused on filling Student Officer roles from GMP's PCSOs, Special Constables and other Police Staff. As yet, no recruitment plan is in place for 2015/16. Should …
