All Most threads in Police Vehicles are of great interest to many, and thank you to those who regularly contribute here. I would ask that we all make sure that threads stay on topic - there have been a few recently that have meandered off so that the thread no longer "does what it says on the tin". I hope that it won't become necessary to start splitting topics that do this, so please have a think before pressing the POST button - if your reply is going off-topic how about starting a separate thread? We remain aware of the risks posed by disclosing information on vehicle information that is not available to the general public. In the past, this has often resulted in s…

Radio coded tone generators
by The Greater Good +- 0 replies

Back in the late 70's the Home Office developed the coded tone generator, at the time this was a box that normally sat under the radio set in a police car, on the front of the box there would be an on/off button, the rest is hard to expain but basically there were a series of what I call spin wheel sprockets which were able to change a number above them so for instance the coded tone generator would have the vehicle callsign so lets say a Response car in Hitchin, North Hertfordshire would be E2Y1 you would then let the Force Operations room know what you were doing, you may have been doing an enquiry, not available, on patrol, having a break and so on. so You would have a…

Emergency Vehicle markings regulations
by The Greater Good +- 9 replies

I heard a few months ago that the regulations affecting what vehicles can use Battenburg were changing, just seen the attached RAF Bomb disposal have had to get rid of the blue on their vehicles. I don't think this applies to RAF Police, Royal Military Police or RN Police as I believe there is an agreement with the Home Office on use. To be honest, there isn't a lot online. I did hear that the regulations also affect Ambulances and that only NHS Ambulances will be allowed to have Green/Yellow Battenburg, but it will only apply to new vehicles (as I said that is hearsay at the moment). The local NHS Ambulances trust used to have CFR's running about in Battenburg liver…

Afternoon all, Just a quick one. I note from shows such as Traffic Cops and Police Interceptors that if a civilian vehicle needs to be moved the officers are able to get inside and move it under Police Insurance. Is this limited to advanced police drivers or can any officer providing they have a driving entitlement through the police force? Thanks in advance. XA84

D1 Driving Entitlement 1 2 3

Afternoon all, I'm hoping to get some clarification on the D1 category. I understand that this is this required for the larger PSU vehicles like the typical IVECO ones: I understand that this can be taken as a course through your own force but how does it work. Does the force teach you and then you go to the DVLA for an test or is there an approved examiner working with the police. I only ask as with every other vehicle it's just a case of whether you can drive a car unless your a motorcyclist Thanks in advance. XA84

Unidentified vehicle

Hey all, I just saw the strangest thing in a Lidl car park in Edinburgh. It was a Mitsubishi Outlander, unmarked with a light bar and sirens. As he was exiting the car park he activated his light bar and grille lights then as he approached the junction to the main road he activated his siren and sped off. I wish i'd got a photo as it just didn't look quite right! Anyone seen a similar vehicle or know of its uses? It wasn't on diplomatic plates and the occupants didn't look like emergency service workers (they were of a rather large build). It looked similar to this car but with the addition of a light bar. Regards

Saw this on twitter the other day, and was wondering what people reckon. (Mods, know it's a news story, but it seemed to fit better here- feel free to move as appropriate). Not so bothered about where they're made, more interested in whether they're fit for purpose. Only ones we use are the Vivaro vans, which are pretty decent tbf- the 15 plate one that my station got recently feels more purpose built rather than having EWE and radio just bolted into the cab. Can't pick up the link, London Evening Standard 1st Feb reporting on Met to get new range of alternate fuel vehicle - cars and motor cycles, including hydrogen fuel cell . The quote includes that they stopped buying diesels in 2015. Certainly a challenging future for policing fleets

Police cars with containment cells 1 2 3

I was looking at the price comparison for police kit online and noticed that North Wales police purchase cars that have a containment cell in the back of them, after loads of digging i managed to find a partial picture showing a divider between the front and the back of the car, akin to US cop cars. Has anyone used a car like this or have any experience regarding them as I have never come across them before.
