When I first started writing, a published writer told me to stop if I could; if the addiction hadn't taken hold. Of course, I ignored the advice and carried on. And carried on through rejection after hope, through obtaining an agent, through failure of that agent to place the novel (not her fault; it's a terrible market) though minor successes with short stories and articles, to the pioint I am now, with a new agent, a new batch of fresh-baked hope, and a pocket novel sold. It's the sort of pursuit where you stick with it because you've already invested so much time and passion, so to chuck it all away and admit defeat is hard. Impossible, perhaps. It…

Here's a thread to share those annoying "oh for foxtrot's sake" moments where something embarrassing, annoying or sods law moments. To start the ball rolling here's a few from me. - Turning on a tap too much and splashing water over your trousers making it look like you missed the toilet. -being on shift and nothing happening all day and only when me and my colleague was in the line at subway about to say what salad I wanted then an immediate comes through we had to run to the other end of the high street only to be a false alarm.

Currently on More 4 at the moment, heres the blurb: "Ten years ago, Phil Grabsky chronicled the life of Mir, an optimistic, cheeky and inquisitive eight-year-old Afghan boy, for the film The Boy Who Plays on the Buddhas of Bamiyan. The Boy from Bamiyan follows Mir's life over the next ten years, as he becomes an adult. Grabsky's film reveals how events in Afghanistan have shaped this young man - as he balances his dream of becoming a teacher with the more basic hope of not dying in the fighting - as well as his family and his country. The result is a unique, humorous and poignant portrayal of life in one of the most turbulent countries on earth" This is quite an …

The Sordid History and Evolution of Handcuff Design Rachel Swaby - Handcuffs have unusual and contradictory design requirements: They must serve one human, and at the same time thwart another. For those who wield handcuffs, they must be light and efficient to put on and remove from a perpetrator. For the unfortunate wearer, the devices must restrain resistant wrists whether they happen to be thick or thin. And cuffs can't succumb to cleverness or brute force escape attempts. Modern handcuffs are great for accomplishing all of the above. But it took more than 100 years to perfect the design. Before the mid-19th century, a number of somewhat brutal methods failed on var…

What do you go by in terms of the amount of time after drinking you can't drive as you will still be over the limit? I have always been told for every unit of alcohol you drink, you cannot drive for 1 hour per unit. So for example, I have my last drink at midnight, after drinking 10 units that means I cannot drive until 10am. Thoughts?

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/conservative/8817437/David-Cameron-to-order-further-investigation-into-Liam-Foxs-relationship-with-Adam-Werritty.html I wondered how long it would be before something like this happened to Fox. Here is the man who illegally claimed £22,568 in expences, which he was made to pay back, after appealing half a dozen times, and ran up a bill of £19,000 pounds in FOUR years on his mobile phone bill. How the hell do you spend that much. He certainly lacks integrity and was subject to much speculation that he was gay, and the marriage was to try a deflect attention from that. I think Labour are trying to latch onto anything for politica…

Well, some of you may have experienced this at some time or other but for me at 51 years old it is a bit of a blow to the system. I have worked since leaving school at 16 and never been out of work since! I really don't know what I will do now, as my disability (diagnosed with MS in 2004) will restrict me on the type of job I can do. I hope none of you guys get the dreaded redundancy news during your careers, it's an awful feeling.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2051226/Newcastles-Danny-Simpson-tries-dodge-driving-ban-I-afford-chauffeur.html £10k a week, can't afford a driver. Poor little rich footballer. He saving for his future apparently, so giving him a driving ban would cause him 'undue hardship'. I'm saving for my, and my family's future too chappy, and you get paid more in a month than I do in a year. Maybe if you sold your Audi R8 (which cost around £80K) and bought a cheaper car, you'd save a bit more. For your future, you understand. For your future. Of course, not doing 48 in a 30 would also help you having a future - or indeed, letting somebody else have a future........…

I was lucky enough to have been invited to Penby's Concert on Saturday evening at the Chapel in Capel Newydd, LLandeilo. The Concert lasted two hours and was excellent, there were two soloists who sang at various times. The singing was of very high quality, with all the choir dressed in smart blazers and slacks, with a crest on the pocket, and a very fetching tie. The Hospitality was great, and I had the pleasure of meeting Mrs Penby, a lovely lady, who looked after me during the evening. Following the two hour concert was some lavish food, supplied by the wives of the gents in the choir. It was well worth the two hour drive down the M4, not only for the singing but…

I was on a foot patrol with another officer last week when we had to walk through a large, dark graveyard - targeted patrols due to lead roofing thefts. It was a real Stephen King night, wind blowing, strange bangings, rustlings and howlings. We both walked through in silence, doing impressions of demented lighthouses with our torches swinging wildly at every noise. I was convinced I could hear someone talking at the back of the church (my colleage agreed) and went to investigate, but no one was there. We both exchanged nervous grins when we finally got back into the range of streetlights and were relieved our patrol did not take us back the same way It got me thinking .…
