Fifty years ago today, Britain saw the end of an era with the laying to rest of Sir Winston Churchill. I recall the day well - I was undergoing glider pilot training at an RAF station just outside Manchester. There was no flying that morning; we had a short parade where the CO of the school emphasised Churchill's wartime role (we didn't really need telling but the CO had been a wartime flyer; so his views counted for a lot with us) and then we crowded into the crew-room to watch the funeral on TV. Black & white picture, of course, but the atmosphere along the route of the funeral procession was very clearly communicated - an almost total sense of grief amongst ordinar…

I thought that the BBC news coverage was very moving today. Lets just hope that when the remaining survivors have all gone, the youngsters of today (and others too) do not forget what exactly happened at the concentration camp/s, and that the memory of those atrocities is never allowed to dwindle.
