Hey all need some help, Just got myself a lovely 9 week old Labrador cross German Shepard puppy called Dexter and need to get him insured had a look at a few sites and all seem quite good with Virgin money being the best so far and Direct Line and Tesco being the worse. Just wondering if anyone here has had or does have pet insurance and if they can recommend a specific company or policy, i am looking for one with a fairly low excess i don't mind paying more on the premium's each month. Hes due to be chipped next week so i am not sure if that lowers the cost or not. Look forward to the replies Chris oh and here is a piccy

Welfare concern for a pet after a residential visit

Hi everyone, I feel I need to ask for some advice regarding an enquiry I attended last night and came faced with a scene I strangely have not faced yet on duty... We arrived at the address for an arrest inquiry, of which the wanted person was present with one other male. Now the address was not in great shape, but not the worst I have been in by a long shot, but was still very dirty and smelly and generally poor condition for an animal to be living in, let alone a human! In the corner of a room was a cage with a very small dog. The other male (not wanted) said it was his dog, which was just over a year old Jack Russell cross-breed. I am a dog owner myself, and the dog lo…

Hi there, my partner and I keep chickens, and we just wanted to offer advice and information to anyone on here who keeps Chickens. We should state it's just Hens, not Roosters, that we might be able to help with. Also if anyone wanted to look externally for advice, we would suggest Omlet

Problem with neighbours - cat related! 1 2 3
by McScottish- 34 replies

Hello all, Got a bit of an issue with neighbours in the next street. We have a 8 year cat called Ted who we adopted 4 years ago from the RSPCA. Very faithful, never used to wander. Until a few months ago. He kept coming back smelling of cigarette smoke, then he started staying away more and more frequently. Being worried, we got a locator device which goes onto the cats collar and allows you to see what direction the cat is (very useful bit of kit!). My partner traced the cat to the neighbour's house (who smoke). My partner spoke to the neighbours who were fine, saying that Ted wandered in frequently when they had the door open. They said they fed it prawns and l…

Advice wanted on Siberian Husky's
by i-plod- 6 replies

Hello! I think this is the best place to ask After losing our 2nd cat to a car only a few weeks ago we have decided to get another one due to the pain it causes us when you lose one. I have been nagging the wife for a dog since I met her and it looks like that will be our next step. We have always been around dogs with family but never had one ourselves while living together. We had decided on either a German Shepard or a Siberian Husky with us both leaning more towards the Husky region. Do any of our fine forum users have Husky's and wondered if you could share your experience? When buying a puppy what should I ask for/look out for? They seem to range from £300-100…

WOOF! Dog Barking Noise Complaint
by Administrative Account- 8 replies

I'd better get in first with the forum disclaimer before I go any further; So, now that's out of the way we have just had a notice from the Council that there has been a complaint made because our dog (1yr old Dachshund) allegedly regularly barks. She does bark yes because she is a dog, but I am not sure what can constitute a complaint about a dog barking regularly (times of day/night) etc and how I can stop her barking considering that she is a dog and that is how she talks to us when she is pleased to see us or excited, or there is a knock at the door. I do understand that a dog barking can be grating to say the least, but she spends the days with me (approx 9hrs …

Dog training - any ideas...
by Frogman- 8 replies

My parents Shitztu dog is almost 6 months old. They have dedicated a lot of time to his training and are doing exremely well. From day one, he has slept in a crate/pen in the kitchen. At first, he was locked in his pen but after becoming quite confident that his toilet training was progressing nicely, we started leaving it open for him during the night to have access to a cool laminate floor and water etc. Recently he's started whimpering and crying when the folks go to bed about 11.30pm (just like the first few days he was brought home to their house). The first time he did this, we put it down to an eventful day where he was quite busy and slept most of the afternoon…

Cat
by Skeptocynic- 5 replies

Hi, I have a 1 year old ragdoll cat. He is a large indoor cat (normal for the breed), we live in a ground floor 1 bed flat, which is a fair size but with no enclosed garden space.I often use a laser pen to excerise him, which he very much enjoys, and can pick up quite some speed in the hall way before he thuds in to the front door. Problem is, I am worried he is annoyed with the lack of space. He often has a 'mad ten minutes' where he bombs around, pouncing on cushions and climbing the walls. Is this an expression of frustration with his surroundings? Is it just normal cat energy? I would post this on a cat forum, but I'd like to spare myself the pet-owning enthusias…

Mind games for pups
by Miki- 1 reply

I have a Patterdale Terrier pup. He's about 4 mths now and is a lovely dog, very well-behaved for his age and very intelligent. He's reasonably good with our cat and has learned sit, lie down, no, bed and (almost) stay. He's almost house trained and walks nicely on a normal lead 90% of the time, he also comes back quickly when called on our evening walks (there are no distractions). He doesn't take food that isn't given to him and even waits for permission to eat, and he's slowly learning that the kids are not toys. So all in all he's doing really well for such a young dog. I'm keen to keep him active as he is naturally a working dog and I usually take him on 2 half hr…

Problems with cats and foxes 1 2
by Burnie- 26 replies

Okay - here's the situation: My landlord has just had the garden redone. This involved stripping out the weeds, laying a new weedproof mat on top of the existing gravel and then shovelling on a new load of pea-gravel (3 tonnes of the stuff) Unfurtunately the local feline population have decided that my garden is now a huge kitty-litter tray. I am finding 3 or 4 'specimen' of fox and cat mess in the gravel every day. Does anyone have any (free/cheap) suggestions as to how to stop this. We didn't have a problem until the garden was re-done.
