I have a Patterdale Terrier pup. He's about 4 mths now and is a lovely dog, very well-behaved for his age and very intelligent.

He's reasonably good with our cat and has learned sit, lie down, no, bed and (almost) stay. He's almost house trained and walks nicely on a normal lead 90% of the time, he also comes back quickly when called on our evening walks (there are no distractions). He doesn't take food that isn't given to him and even waits for permission to eat, and he's slowly learning that the kids are not toys. So all in all he's doing really well for such a young dog.

I'm keen to keep him active as he is naturally a working dog and I usually take him on 2 half hr walks a day, I can't wait until he big enough to take treking for the day. In the house he's naturally quiet and either sleeps or quietly follows family around, in the garden he's a lunatic and has quite taken to digging for rabbits and foxes in my lawn (both of which are normal for his breed).

I am just wondering if anyone has any ideas for games to play to keep his mind busy, other than normal training. I really want to stop him from getting too bored as he is a terrier and they can be very destructful when bored. I've tried hiding treats around the house and encouraging him to find them but he's more interested in helping the cat to catch mice outside. I'm not very inventive and tend to just by toys for him to playwith but now I'm right out of ideas.

What a good choice of dog - my #2 dog is a rescue patterdale/lakeland cross. It was recommended to me to try the agility training as they are also intelligent dog. I've not done this because of a lack of suitable time, but those sort of games can be played easily at home with a minimum of kit.

I also have a treat ball: you put small treats in it and they have to roll it around to get the treats out. That often keeps her happy. Similarly she loves raw hide bones which givers her something that she is allowed to chew.

Outside, I often take 2 throw toys into the field (the rubber ball on a rope fly better than just rope. And the tennis ball versions don't survive the teeth). They go miles and having 2 means that Jazz is constantly running at speed - it's the chase she likes the most.
