Politics is everything, even though sometimes we suggest that as police officers that we transcend such matters taking a neutral perspective when enforcing the law. But it would be naïve to suggest that we do not choose what laws we do and do not enforce by making discretionary decisions to 'write that ticket' or to dispose of an incident through 'words of advice'. These decisions will be partly based on core principles based on where you sit on the "political spectrum". What I was wondering is whether you are required to inform your insurance company if you are a Special. I am currently in the process of getting insurance quotes for my renewal due in March, and it appears that you can choose 'Special Constable' as your second occupation. As such are you required to be covered for Business use? Social, Domestic, Pleasure & Commuting only covers commuting to one place of work or study. In these days of pedestrian friendly styling of vehicles, ie more rounded at the front so that a pedestrian is more likely to roll over the front of the car / vans than the old days when they were just blattered across the front of the vehicle or thrown over the roof. This was obviously part of the reason for the decline of Bull-bars on the front of alot of vehicles. I couldn't help wondering why you still see Transit style vans with the roof racks that stretch over the front of the vehicle with 2 bars coming down the front acting a stabilisers for the rack. Just wondering if anyone knows the reason(s) for traffic officers wearing the white cap covers? Is it for increased visibility on the road when on foot? Or just to identify the traffic officers easier? Or is there a story to it? Were the white caps/cap covers for female officers in the past?
