Hi, Ive been a special for 3 months now and Ive just recently picked up an injury (not on duty). I suspect Ive pulled or damaged my achilles tendon or plantar in some way, according to a trained physio who works with me in my day job. I will probably have to see a GP but I fear I will need time off work! I can probably count the number of days off on 1 hand in the last 8 years! I worry this wont reflect well with the specials considering Ive only been in a matter of months! Pure bad luck. Thanks, Simon

If I get injured whilst on duty is there a personal injury insurance that would cover me from lost time at my day job?

Most of us have been in a position where we're in another force area and of course have switched on to the local channel and informed control who we are and why we're there. However I was wondering if anybody knows of any instances where a unit in this position has ever subsequently been diverted to a job in that area. I only ask because I was reading another thread where somebody stated this was the reason for switching on to the local channel. My understanding was always that switching on to the local channel was to reduce airwave traffic and also to inform the local control of what you were doing and where, in case things went wrong and you required back up. I'll be honest, I think the 2 officers handled it very well. The lad in the video makes it sound like they were goading and threatening, stating "those 2 are the worst out of the lot" - but they did a fantastic job of listening and trying to communicate. Very good use of "Betari's Box." Winsor needs to be shown this video, to prove that police are not just there for "criminal issues" and that there is a lot of "social services" work involved.

Sorry if the following has been answered before elsewhere but I have not found it. The question is if forces offer compensation to the day job for lost time, when a member of staff is attending court. I am broaching the subject of my plan to put in my application to my boss at my annual review in two weeks, but being in a small company I know that he is likely to take issue to my being out of work for court days at some point, should all go well. It would be good to have some kind of ace up my sleeve!

Ok now we are back! Who was at Luton last weekend, 300 specials from Northants, Essex, Herts, TVP, have I missed anyone out? it was an early start and a long day, I bit cold but I for one had a great day and enjoyed seeing and talking to other officers from other forces and good to catch up with some mates.

This is not a recruitment query but one asking for opinions on how recruitment happens considering the few places against the large number of applicants. For example, I have seen a lot of comments regarding how Derbyshire police are currently allocating application packs - and they are not good. Derbyshire are getting people to phone a number and register for a evening to collect forms. Apparently thousands have tried to get the 750 forms avaliable and lots of people are getting the 'busy' tone on thr phone. PC David Rathband's Blue Lamp Foundation is a registered charity (1138319) that raises money to support personnel of the Emergency Services, including Ambulance crews who have been criminally injured whilst carrying out their duties. Having always been in BTP I have never considered myself anything other than a police officer, exactly the same as colleagues from other forces, as opposed to someone with a specialist or - probably more aptly - 'niche' role. However, the vast majority of officers haven't been in BTP or really come across us that much (especially out in the sticks) and I guess I was just curious as to what officers from around the country think? This is in part inspired by Jeebs innocently suggesting BTP would normally hand over a 'serious' job to the local force. Hi, I was wondering, I've seen lots of threads on Sgts and Inspectors processes which I think I understand but what happens from Chief Inspector onwards? I know that in the military (the only likeish thing I know a bit about) there are promotional courses which need to be done before people are eligable for promotion and then once they have completed them they're then in the bracket should a position become available. Officers are supposed to the the course first and more continuation training as and when they get into a job at the next rank. How does it work in the police?

Hi all, Firstly I apologise if there is already a thread on this, but I tried searching and couldnt find one, so I decided to start this one off myself. As many of the newbies on the site may be well aware (and those who are about to start/finish training) the acronyms that the force use can be difficult to remeber especially if along with them, you have to remember countless pieces of legislation and law etc. I know that it can be quite a job abbreviating acts, laws, criminal actions etc in your pocket note book, and It is often difficult for the newbies on this site to understand what they are looking at when reading threads on here.
