Well, it's been a while, a quick trawl shows a lot of new user names but some familiar ones too. I'm after a favour from you all. Since moving from SC to PC two years ago I've been completeing a work based learning degree as part of my probation, I now have to complete a research project, the topic of which being my choice. Given my time as an SC I've decided to look into expanding the role of Special Constables with a view to enhanced training in order to help SC's move into specialist departments and generally increase their development and job satisfaction. So, my questions for you are: What expeirences do you have of specialist roles and departments, if any? Whi…

Just seen the following video of a car being driven the wrong way around Bristol by a drink driver, just amazed that no one was hurt. The driver John Rixon received a 12 month prison sentence suspended for two years was made the subject of 12 months' supervision and told to take an impaired drivers' course. He was disqualified from driving for three years and ordered to pass an extended driving test before returning to the road. I just can't understand why someone who was so drunk would attempt to drive, amazing video never the less, just glad this did not turn into a chase. http://bcove.me/o6k6qeka

Just a heads up at this point: Next Monday, 09/09/13, 20:00 BBC 1 Locked Up For Being Ill? Not currently available on BBC iPlayer DURATION: 30 MINUTES There is a crisis in police cells across the country, and it is not to do with crime, according to senior officers. The police say they regularly have to detain mental health patients who should be dealt with by psychiatric professionals. The problem is so bad that police estimate it takes twenty five per cent of their time. With exclusive access to police custody, reporter Paul Kenyon discovers a world of self-harm and suicide attempts which is stretching police to their limits. But he also spends time in a mental h…

You may or may not be aware that the Police federation is conducting a survey aimed at the special constabulary on weather or not the federation would be something for them. They have held this survey before and only a small fraction of Specials weren't interested. Here's the linky: http://www.polfed.org/newsroom/1551.aspx

Not suitable for the locker room so I am posting this here... Your experiences with drunk youth on the streets. I have worked with young people in and around London for years, vulnerable, difficult, ex-offender youth of mixed characters. Overall I have managed to work well with them all. Granted non were drunk... however some have wanted to fight but i have been fine calming them down and changing their attitudes for the better especially between each other. QUESTION What was your first experience or classic! dealing with young drunk youth on a Thursday/Friday/Saturday night? What was Circumstances, Action & Results please guys??? I am trying to get some insig…

Hi, Not wanting to kick off the malarkey about travel entitlements but it did make me wonder the extent to which 'orders' can encroach onto your private life and the legality of them. Reading Police Regulations it does actually say that all political activism is forbidden so I guess Police Regulations 2013 don't apply to BTP special constables (not a dig just an observation) Could the service dictate how you get to work. For example could they say, you must not ride a bicycle to work? Or during the winter months, no motorcycles? Bear with me on this. I've been told (back in the sands of time) the only thing I can use my warrant card for is to prove I am a police of…

I'm starting this topic just to get people's opinion on this matter. Recently I was asked to work a special event that involved general high vis patrol, providing a police presence and tackling anti social behaviour. The event itself was a Farm show, and in the evening a licenced bar was open in the show grounds. In addition to this there was also a licenced premises in the small village about 5 minute walk away from the grounds. Expected turnout was around 800 people. The op order put myself, 3 other special constables, 3 PC's and 4 PCSO's on a late shift working 1700 - 0300. Now when I understood that PCOS's were to be working late shift on an event that has the p…
