Morning all, I attested about a week ago now and It has finally sunk in that I am a police officer! I have my first shift in Hackney next week and I was wondering what to expect and how to prepare myself for finally putting all of my training into good practice. Dan

Yesterday I was driving along a road and saw a Police Officer fighting to control some bloke (it was a rough area and the bloke was massive). I stopped and helped him (by kneeling on the blokes head and holding his arm) and he soon had him arrested and cuffed against his car. I couldn't go straight away as I had to give some details etc, but while we waited for another car the Officer said he was often single crewed and calling for help was not always practical. He then sort of went into a bit of a rant about pay and not being appreciated. He seemed really sick of the job. Why on earth are Officers being sent out on their own and why is help so far away, its not good fo…

I wanted to ask this question for a while. I was at a BBQ a few weeks back. A friend of a friend was there smoking a joint. It got passed round. I refused, purely on the basis that I like to stay awake and bottles of Grolsh seemed to be hitting the spot. But anyway, the next day I was wondering how I would deal with a situation like that if I was a Police Officer? I know all the ins and outs of Cannabis use, but the law is its illegal and this is about how I would deal with something like that around friends in a situation like that - I dont want to lose friends It seems like a very difficult situation to me.

A video I came across when looking for something else. It shows its age but is nevertheless quite interesting to see how things have evolved. I can't embed it so clicky.

As Special Constables (or other 'grades' of Specials) we all know that we have full Police powers in our legal 'jurisdictions' be that England and Wales or Scotland, seeing as Northern Ireland doesn't really concern Special Constables anyway. I'm currently serving in West Yorkshire Police. However, I'm from Leicestershire and one of my good friends from back home recently attested as a Special Constable with Leicestershire Police. As we've been good friends a while and we always talk about Policing in general, as well as him liking to hear my stories from up North, we've often said how good it would be if we could go on the beat together. There's not much chance of him …

Had an issue lately when I was trying to arrest a male but the male ran off down an alley way past a night club. The club had door staff on, and I shouted at the door staff "Officer in uniform! - Don't let him past you". The doorman stood by, ignored my call and let the male run past. Needless to say I was frustrated. The doorman had an obligation to assist when asked to do so. It made me wonder why he is a doorman if he ignores the opportunity to help out the police when needed. Anyone els have similar experiences?

A quick question of official allowance and personal preference. Many legal sprays are on the market which dye's the face and clothes of an offender either covertly (UV) or overtly (balamory-esque bright colours) to help deter against theft etc. After reading a few articles on the subject, I was wondering if Do any PC's or SC's that you know of carry this on duty with them. I can see the benefit of this spray in a public order situation to help identify offenders en masse, but do you think that this spray has it merits in everyday policing, say marking a group of men that are brawling in the street, but you can only nick a couple? Just a thought.

Sat in traffic on the A1. This is clearly illegal, right?

Guys can someone mobilise for an NRPS posting (Home commitment so nothing overseas) and remain an SPC...? Not for me. I don't see the point...! Cheers, 06 (NRPS is Non-Regular Permanent Staff). Normally a TA who works full time for a set period of 1-2 years.

A question for younger specials, how do you respond when asked how old you are when you're on duty? Are you honest, do you dodge the question, how do you go about it? I'm 19, so get asked a fair bit, but they generally guess that I'm 23/24 and I tell them they're about right

I'll be the first to admit that I don't really think that uniform should be to military standards in the Police, but this really does take the biscuit. Even I think this is a rather shoddy look, so it must be pretty bad. This is from The Route Masters programme on BBC2.
