I said I would create a new thread that is separate from the SC to PC thread for ex MSC officers who have made the transition to PC (or are nearing the end) for us to discuss topics that are more relevant and appropriate to us (e.g. probation, regular soroc book, courses and training, pay and conditions, passing out, street duties course and detachments etc etc) rather than a thread that just focuses on the MSC to PC process. Hopefully this thread gets pinned.

I'd love to hear people's feedback on being a special. Is it everything you'd hoped it would be? Do you love it or hate it? What have been your proudest and worst moments? What could be added to make the job even better? Has it made you want to become a PC or made you want to pack it in all together? Cheers Londonmsc

Hello All, I'm thinking of transferring universities from Durham to Goldsmith's, which would mean enquiring to the Met HR about a possible transfer and have a few questions to ask. I'm busy doing my homework reading up on which Boroughs to work in but have a few questions to ask. Firstly, I love my home force and enjoy working on shift immensely even though I only really have a couple of square miles in my command. The appeal of working in communities that are much more diverse in London is big, but would it mean reverting back to working with community/neighbourhood policing rather than shiftwork? I prefer working with the shift and would ideally carry on to do so. I …

I was at a London shopping centre where I saw two officers both with borough letters and shoulder numbers starting with a [certain number], but not wearing SC and Crowns. This got me thinking, they were obviously Specials, but why do they not want to wear there SC and Crowns? I am very proud to be a member of the Specials and have no issues in wearing them. When I started we had large shoulder flashes before moving to smaller epaulette badges and then eventually the SC and Crowns. I have never had a problem or safety issues with wearing the insignia. I know that some forces have got rid of them, but we have not so why do officers bulk at wearing them?

Do the NCALT packages have to be completed before you can go on your first shift? Cheers Londonmsc

So, overall do people think that 2011 was a good year for the MSC? What was good, what was not so good? Have the compulsion to be a Special before joining as a PC and the pre-Olympic surge in numbers been positive for the organisation as a whole? What do you think?

Lynne Owens is Appointed New Chief Officer of Surrey This is a shocker, didn't expect her to go. I have always liked AC Owens and her approach to the Public Order branch, when she was leading it.

Hello all, I'm considering investing in an earpiece for when I'm on duty in plain clothes. I've found myself struggling to balance radio volume with being as incognito as possible! Has anyone purchased an earpiece and if so which one did you buy? I don't fancy buying one online unless I know its the correct earpiece and it works properly. Would you be kind enough to post a link if possible? Thanks!

Hey, Hopefully this thread can be a discussion area for Specials that are starting (fingers crossed) PLC around 30th January 2012. Following last month's email with provisional dates.. any idea on what happens next and when to expect more news on allocation of PLC date/times. Goodluck everyone.

On the MSC Online Announcement page there's a section on applying for role of Investigating Support Officer. Has anyone applied for this role, or know how it will work in practice? Would an officer come in and do their hours requirement as and when, but assisting in an investigation? Are they called out to assist when the relevant crime occurs at any time? Or only if they are on duty at the time?

As per the title really. Can you claim them towards your 200 hours a year and can you be paid for them? I currently (after the farse that is NCALT!) trying to play catch up with getting the last of my packages done.
