It is a relic from the Cold War, designed to get information from the White House to the people, should the worst happen. And there was something distinctly 20th century about the first nationwide emergency alert system test- which was immediately pronounced 'a flop'. Around the country, the planned interruption to all television, cable and radio channels at 2pm EST today came late or not at all, sparking fears about what would happen in a real emergency. Some cable customers were diverted to another channel, or heard music instead. The test was supposed to be transmitted via all television and radio stations within the U.S., including Alaska, Hawaii, the territories o…

Anybody ever thought about joining an American force, if you did what force would you like to join, NY or LA for me ? Very different to working in the UK police but probably just as many risks but in different ways.

Morning all! If you do a search for laser eye surgery on this forum you will find a few stories from forumgoers who have had the procedure and others who are contemplating it. There is also a rather good blog entry by abdesignuk. I thought I'd share my own experiences as they happen and as I'm a serving police officer I will try to put things into a policing context too. Firstly, a bit of background about me: I'm 26 years old, first joined the specials when I was 20 and then joined the regulars at 22. When I first joined the specials I passed the eyesight requirements with no problems but the optician did remark that I may benefit from wearing glasses for distance visio…

With the populatopn rising to amazing numbers one wonders if there is too many people on earth. 60 years ago people were luck if they had a tv in their house, these days everyone has a tv, laptop, mobile phone etc.. but can the earth really provide the materials for all these products ? Countries such as china have a limit to how many children you can have but would this be implemented everywhere. There will be some very hard decisions to be made in the coming years.

November 07, 2011 — MOSCOW (AP) — The Russian historian had always been open about his interest in the dead and eagerly described how he loved to rummage through cemeteries, studying grave stones to uncover the life stories behind them. What he failed to mention, according to police, was that he had dug up 29 bodies and taken them back to his apartment, where he dressed them in women's clothes scavenged from graves and then put them on display. A police video of the man's apartment in the Volga River city of Nizhny Novgorod released Monday shows his macabre collection of what look like dolls. Lifesize, they are dressed in bright dresses and headscarves, their hands …

Who thinks Bin laden should have been detained and had a fair trial ? Nobody has ever been found guilty of 9/11 and there is no clear proof that he did it, i find it amazing thet the USA think they can just assassinate people (never stopped them before).

Now this is what you call a stop! A Brazilian website has posted a video that it says shows Brazilian federal police ramming an aircraft as the plane attempts to take off from a rural road, because the plane was suspected of operating as part of a smuggling operation. The video, shot from the back seat of the car, shows one man in the car dressed in street clothes holding what appears to be a semi-automatic weapon. As the car pursues the aircraft, the driver reportedly says "Don't fire! I will hit the wing. Do not fire!" Soon after that the car catches up with the single engine aircraft and appears to strike the left wing, sending shattered glass into the car's cabin. On…

Poppys. How disgusting is that?! It was on the news that if an employee wears a poppy to work then they either have to remove it or get sent home. I think thats vile.

With the recent talk about getting ex-military into various roles in "Broken Britain" like teaching for instance the consistantly overlooked job in the media for lots of ex military is the police. I'm interested to hear peoples experiences and how the services differ in peoples experience. Medical material given out in the Army talks about protecting your hearing for later life, one of the examples is failing to get into civplod when you leave because you've knackered it. This has been inspired by yet another thread about TA types wanting to joing the Specials, something which I've personally done. So, if you could just briefly say, what you joined and when and how lon…

http://www.google.co...51301960541892A What a way to diminish support for spending cuts, by giving £650 million away to a nation that has just agreed to spend almost the same amount on submarines. Pathetic.
