Police and health chiefs have criticised a student bar after a teenager was left fighting for her life during an all day half-price Christmas binge-drinking promotion. The 18-year-old girl from Suffolk was knocked down by a bus outside the bar in Sheffield and left with serious head injuries and a punctured lung. The first-year-student is thought to have been drinking for several hours. Pints of beer were sold at £1 each, alcopops, spirits and 'shots' were sold at cut price from 10am at Sheffield University's city centre Bar One. Students apparently began drinking at 4am as they waited for the bar to open while some went straight from morning lectures. South Yorkshir…

A council has painted what is believed to be Britain's shortest ever set of double yellow lines - measuring just 17 inches. The lines have been daubed on the gap between a new permit parking area for residents and a two hour waiting zone in Stafford Street, Norwich, Norfolk. James Little, 56, who is landlord of the Alexandra Tavern in the street, said he was shocked to see the lines had appeared opposite his pub last week. He said: 'I thought the country was skint - but it appears that people can still spend money on daft things like this. 'There just doesn't seem any point in having such short lines. You would have to park a toy car on there to get a ticket. …

Ofcom, the organisation that regulate broadcast TV and radio (amoungst other things) conduct research from time to time to determine how offensive the public find swear words. The basis for this is that what one person may find offensive, another may not. When someone complains about a word that was said in a broadcast, Ofcom know from the research whether others were also likely to have been offended, or perhaps not. The actual research document itself is 298 pages deep, so I thought I might summarise some of it's findings here. I have written this post as a result of Whoppergate and the question as to whether it is considered acceptable to use the word twit in convers…

Will Obama send U.S. citizens to Guantanamo? Outrage as President signs off law to detain home-grown terror suspects indefinitely By MEGHAN KENEALLY Last updated at 4:31 PM on 15th December 2011 Comments (1) Share President Barack Obama faces a massive civil liberties backlash after he signed a law that will allow terror suspects to be held indefinitely- even raising the prospects of U.S. citizens being sent to Guantanamo Bay. By allowing Americans arrested on U.S. soil to be sent to Guantanamo, the laws of the battlefield are essentially extended to include the country's own citizens as within its reach. The move shows a cle…
