https://news.sky.com/story/explosions-reported-near-kyiv-after-putin-authorises-military-operation-in-ukraine-ukraine-latest-12541713 It does seem to have all kicked off now. Ukrainian government and banking websites being hammered by what we have to assume is Russian DDOS and hacking attacks. I don't normally use social media but decided to have a look on Twitter and there's videos of air strikes, explosions, anti aircraft fire. Bit concerned about how quickly things could escalate, the US and Russia both have enough nuclear weapons to obliterate the planet and both equally unwilling to back down and insistent the other must do so. Makes me wonder if we have any civ…

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-manchester-64815723 The security service MI5 missed a significant chance to take action that might have prevented the Manchester Arena attack, an inquiry has found. The inquiry found two pieces of information about Abedi were assessed at the time by the security service as not being terrorism-related. But Sir John said, having heard from MI5 witnesses at the hearings, he considered that did not present an "accurate picture". One officer admitted they considered a possible pressing national security concern on one of the pieces of intelligence but did not immediately discuss it with colleagues and did not write…

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-64584001 Signal has said it would stop providing its service in the UK rather than weaken its encryption or give the authorities backdoor access. Hopefully neither of those, as nearly all of my phone calls and messages go via Signal these days.

Nicola Bulley not the first person to disappear on that stretch of water
by The Greater Good +- 1 reply

Turns out 45 years ago a teenager lost control of his motorbike and was catapulted into a tributary of the River Wyre further upstream where Nicola Bulley has gone missing. He was missing for weeks, eventually his remains were found on the tidal stretch of the River Wyre some two months later. This news will surely disappoint the armchair detectives on social media. Not the first person to disappear on the River Wyre

RIPA - Did the U.K. Armed Forces conduct widespread and unlawful surveillance of the public? 1 2

https://www.visionnews.online/amp/army-spied-on-lockdown-critics-official-records-prove-paranoid-sceptics-were-right-all-along I can it even begin to imagine what was written in the CHARTER application to obtain a RIPA authority. They must have skipped the collateral intrusion box and now the IPCO is now running around flapping and reviewing the application. It’s hard to see a time when generic HM Forces would need to use RIPA, which why be the authority sits at Major General level.

This shows an alarming lack of understanding about the modern threats we face. Strong encryption is not an indicator of criminality. Without it, the private communications of the public would be vulnerable to interception by police IMSI catchers, or the TEMPORA dragnet, or ultimately anyone with an SD…

https://www.openrightsgroup.org/blog/data-sharing-and-migrant-women-reporting-abuse/ If an illegal immigrant reports domestic abuse, should the police report them to immigration and why or why not? On the one hand the police have a duty to uphold the law whether they agree or disagree with it, and an illegal immigrant by definition is breaking the law. On the other hand, reporting someone who has come forward about domestic abuse could discourage others in a similar position from coming forward in future. Where is the balance?
