Pylon design competition winner revealed Organisers called for entries that were both "grounded in reality and beautiful" A T-shaped design has scooped a £5,000 prize in a competition to find the next generation of electricity pylons. Danish engineering firm Bystrup beat 250 rivals to win the Royal Institute of British Architects contest. It set the challenge to replace the familiar "triangle" design - in use since the 1920s - in May, although there is no commitment to build them. An increasing number of pylons are expected to be needed to connect new wind, nuclear and hydroelectric plants. Time for T? Bystrup's architect Rasmus Jessing said he aimed for a more …

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- A Louisville mother said she's concerned about the safety of energy drinks after her daughter ended up in the emergency room after drinking one. Angela Stokes said her daughter's experience should be a wake-up call to all parents. Under the law, there is no age limit on energy drinks, but Stokes said she thinks there should be after what happened to her 10-year-old daughter, Ollivia Strickland, while attending a skating party. "She came home from skating and she was real hyper and jumping around and she said her heart was beating really fast," said Stokes. "She was super-hyper. I thought after skating for four or five hours, she'd be worn ou…

Even experienced drivers can be baffled when confronted by a forest of road signs which they have only seconds to take in. Now, however, street 'clutter' could disappear after councils were yesterday given powers to clear the offending information overload. The crackdown follows the biggest review into Britain's traffic signing system for 40 years. Transport minister Norman Baker also announced a shake-up of parking and bus lane signs, which often feature an impenetrable list of timings, exemptions and instructions for permit holders. They will become much clearer and simpler, while still enforcing the limits. And a new sign has been designed to stop the curse of big…

'A crime against our Armed Forces': Yobs smash First World War memorial to pieces Vandals strike as village prepares to honour war dead Not known if memorial can be repaired by Remembrance Day Businessman places £1,000 bounty on heads of culprits This sorry sight is the result of mindless vandalism which police are calling a 'crime against our Armed Forces'. The First World War memorial was knocked over on Friday night, leaving lumps of stone scattered across the grass where people would normally stand to pay their respects. Villagers in Prestbury, near Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, where the structure has stood proudly since 1920, have placed a £1,000 bount…

Home Sec': Source David Cameron: Source Nick Clegg: Source: Lib' Dem' party conference Now, I don't think the HRA should be completely scrapped unless it is replaced. As we all know, it protects the individuals rights and freedoms against any abuse by the state, but, it is commonly used, as reported in many newspapers, for the benefit of criminals - particularly the matter of deportation. I would be interested in hearing more about this British Bill of rights (researching it at the mo'). Go forth and share your thoughts.

I understand what you are saying my friend but financial crises and Government borrowing are as old as the hills. The only police officers retiring at 48 at the moment are those who joined in the early 1980s. Those joining since 2006 can expect to be working well past 55 to get a severely reduced pension. Even officers on the old pension are due to pay over 14% (far and away the highest public sector contribution) of their salary into theirs. Police pensions are a tiny fraction of public sector spending. Personally I can think of many things to cut before that. The EU (30+ billion)/overseas aid (7.7 billion) a wasteful and inequitous benefits system. The list goes on. I…

A traveller who moved on to Green Belt land over a Bank Holiday and developed it was jailed by a High Court judge. Within hours of Thomas Cash being sent to prison, the three caravans he and his family were living in had been removed from the land. The case is in marked contrast to the fiasco at Dale Farm in Essex, where hundreds of travellers have lived on illegally developed Green Belt land for ten years. Last night homeowners living near the site at Birch Green in Hertfordshire described it as a rare victory for common sense. Cash, 29, and his family bought a field in the hamlet and arrived there on the afternoon of Friday, August 26. It was the start of a Bank Holid…

Advice please. I have currently started a new job in the NHS, as I'm sure you are all aware of the patients information etc the NHS store. I have seen a member of staff looking at their own information on the system and other peoples. I'm very unsure if I should report this and who to? As this person is very friendly with a very senior person in the company. I have read the disclaimer and understand it. Kind Regards
