Hi all, Fairly new here so sorry if been posted before, sure it would have been so many apologies. I'm on the training part of becoming a special at present. From an example the other night, just wondered on the police reactions to these all too common scenarios. Example: driving down a dual carriageway in the fast lane there was a car at front, a 2nd car right up his backside and me behind. Driving at a good constant pace as we approach a slip road a police van pulls along side the front vehicle in the slow lane. In response the car immediately slams on brakes and instantly drops 20-30mph to go same speed as police van. This ment the car tailgating slammed on brakes …

Now Im starting training next week, but after speaking to a couple of officers they carry a spare pair of hinged cuffs tucked away just incase they need an extra pair of cuffs to the rigid ones they carry. Does anyone have any views on this or carry anything similar whilst out?

Howdy folks, Something that could prove to be very useful and a whole lot of fun, I'd like to start a Glossary of Policing Terms. Often when perusing this site I see that people have dealt with a PWITS case or perhaps seen someone TWOC. These two I understand, but there are many more acronyms that I don't understand! I'd like to invite you all to bombard me with e-mails, PMs and forum responses to this to see if we can get the complete Glossary. I'll start us off with the two above. Hi All, I thought I would post a thread on here to see if anyone else has had this problem. About 8 hours in to a duty, whilst at a critical incident, a colleague came to me and stated my airwave had turned off. I thought it was strange and just thought a button had been caught. I turned it back on then about 10 minutes later it turned itself off again. When I switched it back on I continued to watch the screen and a message came up which said something about 'security' then it turned itself off again. Can anyone point me in the right direction?"

So I was thinking about us today, as part of the Special Constabulary... Does anybody else think that this name is old fashioned and outdated...with different words meaning different things to people and all that, and what else could we be called? Volunteer Constables or.. Maybe just even..dare I say it - as we ARE... Police Constables? I mean, we are, after all. Why should PC have to mean regular?

Hello there, I'm a bit of a newbie here! I'm not a serving special or regular, but I am in the application process for Civil Nuclear Constabulary with my assessment centre in February . Just wanted to say a thank you really, yesterday whilst at a regular boxing day family party, an individual high on drugs broke in threatening to "stab everybody who went near him". (Turned out to be the familys' daughters ex boyfriend!), and on calling the Police they arrived within 3 minutes, cornered and arrested the suspect (who was resisting) and had him out of the house without having to use any PPE other than deploying the baton as a deterrent. A quick Q Is it possible to pay in a higher rate of contributions to your police pension to reduce the length of time you need to serve to retire on full pension? e.g. if on the 35 scheme, pay a higher rate (maybe 1 or 2% more) and retire after 30 years?

Hey, I'm not actually an officer. Just currently in the application process Rather curious to how the arresting officer is decided. For example two officers taking down a resisting crim and he's restrained etc. Is there a specific time where you have to read him his rights and who is in charge of making the arrest out of the two officers? First come first serve? Take it in turns? Superior officer? Does it really matter? Cheersssss

Hello all, In my force, the priority with specials is to recruit as many as possible and to have them in visible frontline roles. I am curious whether any of you who are volunteering your time feel that you have skills in your 'normal' working lives which could benefit the force more than being a body on the street? I know that in City of London specials are recruited to work in the fraud investigation teams. I suspect there must be many who volunteer for forces who work in finance and so would have a lot to offer, or those who would be capable of working in CID and investigating complex cases. Does anyone do this, and should this be more common?

In my SC career that began back in April I have worked consistantly with a Town Centre team. My man role has been combating anti-social behaviour and violence during busy weekend nights in a popular area consisting of 6 nightclubs, a university and various bars, pubs and restraunts. Since beginning Ive strived to learn, Ive put myself out of my comfort zone, Ive been in dangerous situations and my confidence has grown from it. Ive also witnessed alot of behaviour Ive found appalling and had things said to me, by people who have no idea who I am, which have been threatening, even to the extent of threatening my family. I would have bought this was standard procedure no? They fit the description and were at the scene after all..
