General Policing Discussions

Our nick is fairly large (response teams about 1 and 12) and has a healthy contingent of Specials. I've been asked to have a look at ways we can get them working more closely with regular PCs. Let me say from the outset that I enjoy working with SCs and am keen to see them learn and develop, and get the best out of policing, as well as to be a real asset to their regular colleagues. Based on what I've seen, I've come up with a few ideas. I'd be interested in hearing what people think, as these are no doubt issues that are common to many forces and stations.. 1. Will the MET be recruiting specials from other forces/areas to help police the olympics later this year? I've had a look around but couldn't see anything but sure I heard someone saying this might be the case!

I've noticed a good many news story now abbreviate Police Constable to Pc instead of PC. Is this a force/media preference? It isn't grammatically correct as abbreviations should always be capped (and traditionally interspersed with dots) e.g. P.C.

Talking to a guy the other day out and about in Newcastle he told me that he left his old job to become a full time Police Officer after being a special for two years. I'm half way through my second year studying Sports Journalism specialising in Formula 1 (Ladies, form a queue please) It's always been my dream to work in Formula 1 in some way but as time goes on I wonder whether the police may be calling my name. Has anyone on here had a full time job, become a special, only for a full time post as a reg to become available and go for it an be successful?? Tommy P

Hi All, First year of being a special is almost up and I am due for re certification. However I can remember the last time I cuffed someone with full proper procedure - as I have usually been in a rumble with people... I know the 3 procedures - Stacked to the front and rear and rear with backs of hand touching but its just remembering where to stand for left handed people... Sorry if this is in the wrong section of the forum. I've been booked on for Public Order training, but havn't had any other information from my borough other then it is tomorrow! Not even so much as what time it starts. I was wondering if anybody could fill me in on what I need to know. Arrival Time? Protocol? Kit List? Transport? Anything else? I was always under the impression that a member of the armed forces was a crown servant, meaning that they served the crown, and was required to do whatever the crown required of them, including killing johnny foreigner if need be. I was also under the impression, though less strongly held that a Police Officer was also a crown servant and was required to keep the queens peace and protect the queens subjects (now replaced by anyone who is present in the country regardless of nationality or legal right). However having tried to get a definition of a crown servant it seems to be watered down and very unclear as to who can claim to hold the title of crown servant, a title …

Every day we hear in the papers and on the TV about double dip recessions, mass unemployment and 2.6 million or 8.5% out of work. Made me wonder how many Specials had been made redundant from there day jobs ? and has anyone had any experience of this ? As a result of unemployment has this meant you do more hours down a the police station or out and about and if or what effect this has had on being a special. I spoke yesterday to a special who had been told that from the end of Feb he would be made unemployed due to cut backs where he worked, as a result he meantioned giving up being a special as he could no longer afford this sadly. I've just got a message from the Fed that there's been an announcement on the first part of the Windsor report. Does anyone have any further details? I've not got details to hand to log onto the Fed website although I couldn;t even tell from the text if there was defo info on there or not.
