General Policing Discussions

Strange, I know, but: What was your best foot chase to date? Mine has to be: called to a Burglary in progress, we arrive and a group of males leave the premiss. Detained by one officer, alerted to another who is making off. Alot skinner, fitter and with a massive headstart. I managed to catch him, cuff him and caution him. All of which I thought I was going to struggle with!

I know this has been discussed before in many ways, but in the current climate, with our police being under close scrutiny and the slightest infractions appearing in the media, do you think that a police officers appearance (smartness etc.) is important? Too often these days I see officers who are very poorly turned out, which is not helped by the 'uniform' which I think looks very untidy.

Something occurred to me the other day which I haven't been able to check in the station myself yet so I was going to put this in the Scenario section but then came to my own conclusion that you would deal with as normal and let the courts decide if disputed. But to discuss if there is an offence. If someone is in traffic, foot on break, hand break off, 'engine running' and they are using there phone without hands free then it is an offence. But what if when questioning that individual they respond with "My engine wasn't running? This Audi has stop start technology and the Engine is off" Then what? I would still deal with as normal or just summons but would it get throw…

I was wondering what occupations are restricted to us as Specials. I am looking for a new job and have seen one for a Trainee Dog Handler but not for the Police. I guess the question is, if I get the job will it impede me being a special?

In the course of my job I often have the opportunity to travel throughout the UK, and meet lots of different police and MoP's. Something I have noticed is that there are different styles of policing in different areas of the UK. In larger urban areas such as cities I noticed that the police are often more ready to take a hard line with alleged offenders and arrest. Officers in rural areas tend to be more relaxed community style of policing. I welcome any thoughts in how different regions of the UK police there communities and deal with alleged offenders.

How does this work ? out on patrol a group shout obscenities at you, so you go over to tell them to wind there necks in or there night will be ending sooner than they had planned . Heard a rumour that despite the Met taking over the functions of Wandsworth Parks Police that the council have retained a small number of officers from the old parks police and have now rebranded these officers to a new organisation called Wandsworth Events Police which is like the old parks police, council owned and operated. Interesting name change to EVENTS POLICE kind odd sounding. Anyone else heard this has happened.

Just a general observation I've made, and I'm interested to find out if it happens all over the country or just the area I cover. We can always identify the sort of people who are likely to start causing trouble because the second they see the police their hands immediately go down their trousers, they start fiddling with themselves, they start spitting a lot more frequently, start standing in a funny stance where they seem to push their hips outwards slightly, and they seem to feel the need to try and stare you out. Guys, I have an interview for CID coming up and am really getting worried about the interview. I'm not nervous about the interview itself, just the fact that I haven't done a competency based interview before and am really getting to the point of thinking that my examples are not the best. I will be having an input from my boss before the real thing but trying to get some pointers. Has anyone done one recently? Do you need jaw dropping examples or can simple things well presented work? I'm really struggling to come up with examples for some areas like problem solving that I think are any good! Cheers Ed

How do you guys book shifts in your force? In mine we have to: select what dates we want, send off for them and (if!) they are available we will be given a set time in which we can perform that duty (i.e. between the hours of 08:00 & 18:00) and not before or after. If we are trying to organise more shifts we have to send an E-mail to our Sergeant who, when it is read, will try and arrange it. I've had it before where I've missed out because the E-mails haven't been read. So, just a query really, how do you book shifts in your force?

So we have currently a process for recruitment within our Police forces in the UK, the standard application process. However, what do you all think if the process was changed from its current stages to anyone who wanted to become a PC had to do at least 1 year being a Special Constable and achieved a certain level in a development/competency checklist. Would this be a fair process for all? Do you think it would give the police force the opportunity to ensure they had selected the correct person for a future PC role by being able to monitor thier behaviours and attitudes outwith the recrutiment process?
