Obviously people have the right to protest, this right must be defended and the police must facilitate people to protest - that is our duty and it is extremely important that this remains the case. This duty is highlighted, and the principle upholded, even if the people protesting are advocating rather unpleasant beliefs (the police protecting BNP marchers springs to mind) We also aim to protect the peace and police any offences that occur around the protest. However, aren't there some offences that are almost inherent that come about through the nature of the protest itself? are you allowed to arrest someone while off duty? if so... do you have the power of arrest in another county e.g.. working in hampshire and arresting someone in the west midlands? put it into a scenario... after a few beers (not drunk) and a bar fight breaks out... are you still allowed to arrest? call for backup, colleges mobile number, 999 or special number? If cuffs are needed as I doubt you would take them in the back of your car uncuffed...

They are, I'm sure, an annoyance to many of you..... but could they potentially every constitute harassment? "please do not ring this number again, I find it extremely annoying and I'm distressed by the way I keep getting interrupted, any further unsolicited phone calls will be considered harassment"

Wasn't too sure if this would be the correct place to post this but thought I'd go for it... If Martial Law was enacted what would the role of the Police be? Does the UK have predesigned Martial Law scenarios as I've never heard it mentioned with the UK. Only countries such as America, Canada, Thailand etc. Would the 'regular' Police be dissolved in order for Military Police/Military Personnel to enforce law?

I was recently chronographing a few rifles and got thinking. As far as I can tell a air rifle is required to be on a firearms certificate if its “capable†of discharging with a muzzle energy of over 12ft-lbs. It was the wording that confused me. The word “capable†is a very open ended word. As far as I am concerned any air rifle I have ever seen is “capable†of discharging at over this limit. Some times its as simple as swapping the ammunition used. Some times you could over fill a pre charged weapon. Some may just require a few adjustments. Background we live on (or should I say "inâ€) a Park Home estate, which is completely on "private land" owned by the one landlord. We all individually own our homes but rent the ground as in normal leasehold.. The landlord has provided a building as a clubhouse and one of the residents holds the drinks licence. Is using illegal Number plats classed as a "Crime".. Can we, the public report car displaying a suspicious looking registration plate? Who should we report it to? I emailed our local Community Police group a photo of one such plate, and received a reply saying they had not yet spotted the car. I was to say the least surprised that they appeared to be waiting for the offence to come to them! I replied again by email saying that the DVLA suggesting they could obtain the offender’s address or that of the registered keeper. My wife was driving our car on which I had put the more stylish and very readable german style number plates (Merc) she was pulled over at the same time as another driver was for the same thing. She was given an on the spot fine, no warning or even a VDRS, was this a little harsh? is it worth taking the case to court? if she had been given the time to call me I could have told her to pull them off to reveal the original plates underneath, they were only taped on.

Calling all traffic heads, can you help? There is a resident who lives on a regular street with no parking restrictions and limited parking space. He has a drive and garage and parks his crappy car, which he only uses for runs to the tip on a bi-monthly basis, on the road in front of his house. Attached to the back of the vehicle is a small trailer. The vehicle is taxed and insured etc but taking up two valuable spaces (this is of course the beef for other residents). Now i know he can park where he wants but with a trailer attached? Can he do that for an long periods? Does it make any difference if the trailer is not attached to the vehicle? Thanks.

As above really..... Is there any time limit for a law to remain active ?? I would imagine that most laws from say over 150 years old are no longer relevant to todays situation ? What's the oldest law that's still used today ? What do you think ??

Exactly what powers to police officers have to detain (suspected) illigal immigrants? I asked the same thing on a UK Borders Agency thread, but no one replied... Something I've been wondering about for a while as having spoken to several regs at my nick it seems they have arrested and taken to custody and then contacted UKBA - what is the relevant legislation? Presumably the SOCA powers to prevent disappearance?

Recently I was coming of the metro system and I was leaving two police officers were stopping people and checking their tickets. All he said was 'can i see your ticket'. I showed my ticket and walked on. When stopped by the police arn't there certain formalities to follow or do they not apply in this case? Also what under what power did the police have the right to stop me?
