Hi thought I throw this out for general discussion and see what others think. Having completed my new new stop search training package (oh deep joy!), it seems quite obvious to me it's far easier and safer to arrest a suspect rather than use our powers under PACE to conduct a search. I know that's not strictly true, but from a practical self preservation point of view its far easier as the threshold for both are the same. There two main reasons for me taking this approach in the future. The first being that stop search at the moment is far more likely to attract a complaint due to media coverage and certain third parties pushing their own agendas. But more importantly i…

It's a Saturday night shift and all has been remarkably quiet thus far. You turn a corner to circle back around onto the local high street and you see two individuals engaged in a minor scuffle. A quick jog down there and you manage to separate the two, one of which has a bloodied lip. Upon speaking to the individuals you find out the one with the bleeding lip is an off duty PC (Man 1) who claims he had been punched by the other individual (Man 2) without provocation. You speak to the other individual, who is also roughed up but showing no external signs of any physical trauma, who claims that he had only punched Man 1 because he had been 'grabbed out of nowhere' and due…

You are on a public bus at peak time, in front of you a man gets up to alight and leave a small backpack on the seat next to him. You don't get a chance to stop him and tell him he forgot it. Do you inform the driver and badge out to evacuate the bus, or do you simply inform them and let them deal with it? As a side note, what is the legislation surrounding finding a suspicious object and what is the typical action taken when it is reported?

This flight could either be in UK or International air space. An intoxicated person is becoming abusive towards other passengers and cabin crew. Their body language is aggressive and you sense the cabin crew may fear for their safety and the safety of other passengers. You are only sat a few seats behind and overhear the commotion. Would you get involved in this situation or just leave it to cabin crew to follow procedure? If you would get involved, would you do so in your capacity as a police officer or just a member of the public? Would you identify yourself as a police officer to the intoxicated person and try to talk things down? How do you think you would handle …

You pass a small area of garages on duty, single crewed, where there is a little road hidden from main view. This area is prolific for residents to smoke cannabis, and often people park their cars at these garages to smoke, before subsequently driving off down the adjacent roads. As you pass this time, you notice four cars. 2 silver Ford Ka, One expensive Silver convertable and an old peugot 206. Easily 20, if not 30 years old. Would the weird meeting of such vehicles be suspicious to you, and what if anything, would you do?

Hi folks, So I thought of something the other day over a coffee and a doughnut with my brother, and I actually don't know what I would do. He said, what would you do if you were off duty at a tech store (for example) and saw someone selling to the store obviously stolen goods (ie. DVD's, multiple copies of the same ones, new titles, still in shrink wrap, that obvious)? I said I'd just do the standard call the police and act as a witness, but then I thought should I be doing anything more in this hypothetical? Cheers in advance! -TangoTango

OK so here goes .... I work in the railway in my other job, seen and dealt with ALL sorts of people and incidents, nothing really has me turn my head anymore. Although every day is a school day at the same time. I only work part time but very often get overtime and do fulltime hours, covering sick leave etc. Covering a shift on Monday night (I swear it was like a full moon on Monday, there was loonies EVERYWHERE), myself and a colleague had an "altercation" with an extremely drunken couple. I had first contact with them, the female inserted her ticket into the ticket barriers and it failed, she muttered and swore and then said loudly "Im going to miss my f*****g train…

A suspicous person around 30-40 has been reported loitering near force headquarters filming buildings and vehicles by a concerned member of Police staff. You are deployed along with the nearest ARV to investigate and arrive on scene along with them to find another officer has started questioning him but he is not answering any questions or giving his details. Would a section 43 Terrorism Act search be appropiate or would you do something different? Would you seize his camera as evidence?

So Sarah is a truck driver and is very proud of her many years accident free driving and her clean licence. Sarah buys a new car and loves it bar one thing the horn. She feels that she could shout louder. She wishes she had the horn from her truck as that is very loud and effective (for it's legitimate purpose). Sarah finds a truck horn that would fit her car it is ce/bs/kite marked (sorry knowledge is rubbish here) and is road legal (well for a truck/bus). Legal? MOT failure?

You're outside the local Magistrate's Court where PCSOs have detained a male on suspicion of breaching a bail condition not to enter the city he is in. However you're in a difficult situation because he claims to have just walked out of court for breach of bail of all things! You have a duty of care to get him out of the city but he is obstructive and won't get in your car. You know where he lives from the PCSOs PNC check. Would you therefore legally be able to arrest him under the Bail Act 1976, park outside his home address and dearrest him or would you legally required to pop to the nick? If you're not able to do either then what would you do and why?

Had an interesting discussion around this at work today, so thought i'd open it up to the floor to get the views of people far more knowledgeable than me! A business has a shared car park, providing parking for a number of businesses on a industrial estate. Between the hours of 0700 and 1900 the gates are open and offer unfettered access from a public road by anyone who wishes to enter. Outside of these hours, the gates are closed, and only open when using an access code given to employees using the carpark. 10 meters into the carpark, there is a speed limit sign displaying 15 MPH as the max speed. Joe Bloggs, who makes collections from a business on the industrial p…

So random one. A couple in their 30's with a new born baby so between (3 and 10 weeks old) want to just get out and do something "normal". They decide to go to their local it's about 1930. They drive and they take their little one who stays either in a car seat/baby carrier. Neither of them drink alcohol and just enjoy the ambiance. The licencee is happy for the baby to be on the premises. There is no music/or just quiet background music. Legal? What if it's not their local but say a weatherspoons? If they walk/bus it rather than drive? If one of both of them drink (not get leathered just a quiet drink) or if their is entertainment (dj/band etc).

Only a short one; You are off duty and get on a bus into town. Once sat down on the top deck, 2 teenagers get on and sit right at the back. You notice a strange smell and recognise it as cannabis. You turn round and it is indeed the 2 lads smoking a joint at the back of the bus. What would you do? Do you have any powers to eject them from the bus? P.S. this is not in London. Thanks

The scenario: You get called to an address where a 18 year old girl is self harming using a knife in the bathroom. The mother is the informant and says that she is not at the address but is travelling on work when she received a phone call where her daughter explained that she is going through severe depression. The mother states that she has been doing this regularly for the last 3 months and they tend to only be light superficial cuts and her daughter explained that cutting herself helps "release some of her anxiety". When you arrive you knock the door to which the daughter tells you to foxtrot oscar and refuses to open the door. You try and convince her to open th…
