You're called to a house at 10pm. It's a freezing cold evening. Outside, in the porch, you meet the informant who tells you that the house is his own (he can prove this to your satisfaction). He's been locked out by his girlfriend, who is inside. She doesn't live with him, but he's given her a key so she can let herself in when she comes round to see him. On this occasion, she's come round when he was out. She knows he's outside, and is refusing to let him in. You speak to her through the letterbox. She's quite calm, sober, and articulate. She says she's not opening the door. You can see her sitting on the sofa watching telly. The male is just wearing jeans and …

In the store that I work in we get a fairly high amount of shoplifting attempts throughout the week. A lot of these attempts are made by the same people, and despite being told rather politely not to come back, they always do. The reason they constantly return is that nothing much is ever really done about it. It's a win-win situation for these guys. They either get out with goods for free, or are simply told to leave the shop. As far as I am aware we report all attempts to the police and we have a security guard on duty 50% of the time we are open - but 50% of our opening hours is a lot of time for shoplifters to operate. I find it very frustrating constantly seeing th…

Mr Smith is a Banker who has lost his job in the 'credit crunch'. Smith has planned to marry Miss Jones next summer. The wedding is organised and paid for. However, he has been offered a job in an Islamic country where you cannot cohabit unless married (or you get stoned to death!). Smith marries Jones at the local registry office so that she can come and live with him in the Islamic country. It was done on the quick because of the need to take up his new role. However, Smith has paid for the summer wedding, which will be something spectacular. Both families want a 'proper' wedding and they would be horrified if they knew that the pair had married in a registry offi…

A Leisure centre is holding a bonfire night with fireworks. They is a payment required to enter the leisure centre (but you could just watch from outside of course). You are walking around the grounds and one of the stall holders points out that "That Fella" just climbed over the fence without paying. What are your actions and do you see any offences?

SC Peters, and SC Smith are in a marked response car whilst on routine patrol at 2am on the roads near the clubs and pubs. SC Smith is driving, and has a 'basic ticket' allowing him to drive from A to B in a marked vehicle, but is not authorised to do blue light runs or compliant stops. SC Peters is a newly qualified SC and has no driving authority. As they are on patrol, they see a Ford Focus in front, weaving from side to side, and occassionally being stalled and restarted. They ask control for the response time of a suitably qualified driver and breath box, which they are informed, is 15 minute away, if they want it. They continue to follow the car, whose driving be…

While an office worker is on a day off, his manager (a junior manager) orders another colleague to break into the absent employees personal desk draws, which are locked. This goes ahead, and the draws are busted open, causing visible damage, and ruining the locking mechanism. The Draws contain mostly highly personal items belonging to the employee, including documentation very confidential to that person (say, medical records), and very little belonging to the company, or that could be work related. Would you consider there any offences anywhere, or is this entirely an internal issue? Heard about something simelar today, and it just set my brain ticking.

It's 1am on a Saturday morning, and you're driving along on duty when you see a male lying on the floor. You stop and assume the worse. You shout to the male, who suddenly starts to move. He stands up and you ask if he is alright. He replies in slurred speach that he is fine, that he has just had a few drinks and that he just wants somewhere to sleep. You ask him a few more questions, and it turns out he has traveled to see his brother, but, they have just had an arguement so the male has left, in a drunken state. He has no money, and is unable to get home. There are no shelters near by. The make is drunk but he is not disorderly. He is not incapable, and is only sleeping…

Hi, was just wondering what offences are committed if someone skateboards on the pavement and then the road at night? I ask for when the usual words of advice fail and the person is adamant that they will continue regardless of possible danger to themselves and other users of the pavement or road.

This scenario is a quick thought I had after reading bensonby's reply to Fry's question in this thread http://www.policespecials.com/forum/index....t&p=1455169 (Thank you both for your inspiration ) So you turn out for your duty and there is a current S44 authorisation in place. Your Sergeant says that your deployment will be at 'xxxxx train station/bus station/military base' (it doesn't actually matter what the detail is). She then says 'at the end of your duty I want you to return at least 10 stop forms with the details of the S44 searches on'. This means that the Sergeant wants you to complete at least 10 searches. There will be ample opportunity to do thi…

How far do you take your role as a Special when in your normal place of work? I have read previously that Specials seem to attract people wanting to know if it is illegal for X, Y and Z and being classed as a general know all for all things legal (which I am sure you understand that you are not). If for example your admin staff hold a raffle (for charity) and sell tickets for £2 each or 5 for £5. How many of you would inform the organiser that they are breaking the law, as the raffle comes under lottery rules and can not be sold for more than £1, plus you are not able to sell multiple tickets at discounted rates. This whole scenario is of course hypothetical, how…

Mr A and Mrs B are common law partners. They share a car, of which Mrs B is the RO but Mr A is the insurance policy holder. Mr A uses it mainly. Mr A begins an affair with a work colleague, Miss C and uses the car to travel to her house to have sex. He is aware that if Mrs B knew exactly why he needed the vehicle, then she would deny him the use of it. When Mr A takes the vehicle to Miss C's house does he commit the offence TWOC? *edit for typos, I'm tired.

Dear PSers, as a user of Facebook, I sometimes get friend requests from people whom I've never heard of, with vague messages such as "you haven't changed a bit" or "I'm a bit greyer now". Some of these moles are already friends with many of my UK classmates, who have never heard of them either. Any offences, and any ability to enforce, apart from blocking these gentlemen?

You need the victim to make an allegation for an assault to have taken place. Is this the case for an ABH? What about a GBH? Or even attempted murder? If the victim doesn't want anything to do with it and won't make a statement, is there anything that can be done? In some cases where there's other evidence, you'll be able to get an affray (for example), of course. But at what point is te line drawn? Or, legally, can you get a common assault charge to stick even without a victim?

Someone has just asked me if an offence is committed when a driver goes right at a roundabout but carries on and actually turns left. Basically this avoids the queue of traffic stacked up in the left hand lane approaching the roundabout. I'm sure there is an offence I just don't know what it is! Thanks, Lee.
