So i'm walking the missus' dog down the local track just off the main road, where i stumble upon a teenage biker who has his helmet off and texting someone. This biker is known for taking his dirt bike (no plate/indicators/lights etc) onto the main road where i live to get between different routes for his scrambler - i've witnessed him travelling on the main road past the house usually around the same time every day. His bike isn't road legal and i doubt he has any kind of insurance policy. So i walk past him with the dog and i must be honest here, i thought of appoaching him and to be quite frank, i could have easily detained him until i called it in for duty officers t…

Opposite my house is a corner area of pavement which could easily have three cars parked on it (random piece of pavement, built to make a smaller junction apparently ). Also along the pavements are grass verges. Anyway, people park on the paved area and grass all the time. It is not uncommon to see cars turning round on the paved area, or parking with the whole car on it! Q.1) Is this an offence? Q.2) What offence is it? Q.3) What response from Police? (i.e. FPN?) Q.4) What offence can be reported for vehicles that park on grass verges? And have ruined grass! Also, a chemist over the road has regular deliveries from a certain company. The delivery drivers always p…

Your a off duty special who is working in a store. A male walks into the store and is acting suspiciously, you decide to make the point of following him around to let him know he is being watched. The male is picking products up and keeps look around, you approach the male and ask if he needs any help. The male says he is fine and you let him carry on "browsing". There is also another member of staff that who has also been keeping an eye on the male. The member of staff believes that the male has stole something. You decide to stand at the exit and wait for him to pass, as he passes what do you do? Even though the alarm doesn't go off you are still suspicious as you are…

Ok, question........... Your off duty driving home, you see someone driving crazy in and out of traffic, kid in the back , with mobile phone to their ear............. you then follow , not exceeding the speed limit, and manage to pull along side at traffic lights, do you a) do nothing b) open your window / present your warrant card and say "get off the phone" if you do B, am i correct in saying you can act of duty , im sure you can always point out that they are breaking the law I know about personal safety, your not getting out of the car your in your car, along side them , normally if you produce your warrant card, then im sure they will get off the phone Also any…

Situation: A Teenager is playing some music loudly out of a mobile phone on a bus about 1600, it is rap music with lots of naughty words liberally thrown in. Question: After a warning (or even before) would this conduct amount to a s.5 p.o.a. offence? (answer: yes, definitely IMHO - but I want a second opinion )

You have cause to stop a vehicle at approximately 23.00hrs on a busy Friday night. You've stopped it initially because it's flagged as having no insurance on PNC, but the driver is adamant he's paying his direct debit on time every month. You also look at the displayed tax disc and notice that the VRM (registration mark) shown is for another vehicle. On removing the tax disc from the holder you notice the old tax disc behind it with the current vehicles VRM shown - this expired at the end of the previous month. You run both the stopped vehicle's VRM and the VRM on the tax disc through PNC, and both come back as registered to the driver of the vehicle. On questioning …

I had a discussion with my dad the other day with regards to how far the defence of "instant arming applies" especially when fearing a BoP. He had witnessed an incident to which police where called to in my street that morning and said to me that if it had kicked off then he would have felt obliged to go in and help break it up. However, he said that because there weere 3 people (2 against one) then, as a short guy who is out of shape, he would have felt it necessary to arm himself somehow. Fortunately the police arrived and nothing serious kicked off anyway. But this got us talking about the general principle of arming oneself when fearing or anticipating a BoP. I argu…

A van has been seen driving around stealing oil drums. A VRM is given by a witness. You check last registered owner address but the name is not known there and they know nothing about a van. Id is checked and all seems regular. You locate the van parked further up the road. After a while you are approached by a male who says he bought the van that afternoon and the vehicle has been parked up since then. The thefts were happening at 10pm. His story seems plausable and his details are collated and the van searched with nothing found. I am begining to think there could be a van with duplicate plates. Would you arrest the male anyway?

If the fire alarm sounds in a building i.e a Leisure Centre, & the members off staff direct customers to assemble by a fire exit to await further instructions, what can be done, if anything, when someone refuses to make their way to a fire exit? At this point there is no confirmation of an actual fire, the alarm has sounded & is being investigated. The emergency procedure dictates that staff should ensure that customers are assembled at a fire exit should evacuation have to take place. This comes about as a man recently refused to follow the directions from staff in this situation, he insisted on remaining in the changing area; he was not undressed at the time…

A and B are a couple and practically live together (say 99 days out of 100) although B owns the house. Some of the items in the house are jointly owned and some are owned by just B and some just A. You’re called to the house by B, he stayed out last night and came home to find that the front room has. Broken mugs thrown against the wall, tv and fire place. A huge mirror has been smashed damage to the table and the hifi is broken He has been round and got his key already and is adamant it was A although some time A son lets himself in, no forced entry is found! B does not support police in prosecution but clearly does not think this is acceptable. What do you s…

Hey all, heres one for you. Note: I apologise for the length of this, once I got started I just kept adding bits! You, PC Smith and another officer, PC Jones are on traffic partol late one weekday evening (midnight) in a busy city centre. As you are driving through the city centre you see a car pull out of a one way street the wrong way. You follow the car and your ANPR informs you that it is uninsured. You pull the car over. PC Jones goes to see the driver. As he approaches he sees that the driver is a younger lad, when asked his name its James. PC Jones asks James why he came out of the street the wrong way, he apologises and says he was dropping someone off. …

Today myself and two of my mates were taking my younger brother up to our local country park to enjoy some sledging in the wonderful weather we are currently having. The country park is just really for kids, it has a kids petting zoo, kids play ground and a number of fields including a large golf club for normal MOPs. As I arrived in the car park I seen a car race down the road and do a huge 360 skid across the ice, at first I was sure it was perhaps a mistake but he continued doing it 5-6 times trying to impress a guy and a girl who weren't in the car. Question) If you were in my boots and seen him stopping, what would you do? Ignore it, call it in or have a word. The…

Scenario... Officer Smith is off duty, he is at a local cornershop getting some money from a cash machine when his mate Bob Jones says to him "ere mate, that guy who just drove in was drinking from a beer can" Officer smith looks over and sees a blue Ford Escort pulling further into the car park and says to Bob "That blue escort?" to which Bob says "yeh" As Smith and Jones are walking away from the cash point, they see the escort pull up to the entrance, Smith sees the driver using a mobile phone in his right hand whilst edging nearer to the road, the driver then uses his left hand to pick up a can of stella and take a swig of it... Smith having seen enough of this app…

I suppose this scenario can be used in any retail situation but I'm going to use this scenario at an electronics store. So you are an off duty special and during the day you work at an electronics store, two males walk into the store and request a gift voucher at the value of £450. Since this is a large amount of money to be placed on a gift card you confirm with the two males that it was £450 they had asked for. The two males agree and give you a bank card, when you look at the bank card you think the card is suspicious so you decide to use a card authorization system to check if the card is legitimate. The two males are still waiting for the payment to be completed…
