A few years back, I was working with a regular, and we stopped a vehicle at a nighttime random checkpoint. Vehicle licence had expired and the motorist was driving on a suspended licence. My partner wrote up a court summons for him, as well as a FPN for not having a valid MOT test. Throughout this time I did not intervene or interact with the driver, and stood in the road. The driver then said something in the lines of "What the hell are you doing there standing like an SS officer?" This annoyed me as I had done nothing to compound his self-induced aggrieved state, and I knew that if I had hauled him to the station on an "insulting a public servant" charge, the duty inves…

I work in a town where, in the town centre, there is only one pub where all the idiots will drink. (let's call this 'The Crown') Let's say that you are outside (as you are on foot patrol) and an individual (Mr Smith) who is clearly in drink is being somewhat abusive and perhaps pushing their luck upto the point where they may be coming in for section 5/ D & D/ BOP. Mr Smith then re-enters the pub. In your experience you know that it tends to be the same idiot at the start of the night who ends up coming in at the end of the night. You expect to deal with Mr Smith later, after he's had even more alcohol! Now, technically, it's illegal for The Crown's bar-sta…

I have recently been travelling to work, and whatnot on my bike, at the bottom of the hill i live on, there have been roadworks and hence temporary redlights. Iv always stopped for redlights on my bike, whether its 2am and no-ones around, or whether im in fullview. I just accept that as a fact, however, i watched 6 cars over two days, just drive through the redlight. A. If this is a temporary red light, and technically doesn't substitute any other red light, is it illegal to go through? B. Im an MOP. Is there anything i can do? Apart from take pictures and send them to the police.. (Abit like waiting for people to commit offences?!) C. What would/should an off-duty Of…

Here's the scenario... You and your colleague are on mobile patrol one evening. Your heading for a dual carrigway linking 2 villages where you see a vehicle in front of you swerving across the lane he's in. You follow for a while and you can see him putting his phone to his ear. You personal interpretation is that he's trying to get hold of someone by playing with his phone (which is causing him to swerve) and ringing whoever he's trying to contact. Anyway, he looks like a self employed tradesman with his van full of "John's electrics" logo's all over it (made up name by the way ). What looks like his mobile business number is in big font across the back of the van and…

You in full uniform on mobile patrol. You notice a vehicle with a brake light out and cause it to stop. You have not noted any concerns about the driver's manner of driving. Upon speaking with the driver, his breath smells of intoxicants and he states to you he has come from the pub and has consumed two pints of lager. You start the roadside screening process and request a sample of breath for analysis. The driver refuses despite being told that he will be arrested if he does not comply. The driver has no medical complaints, nor gives any reason why he cannot provide the sample. Do you arrest the driver for; (a) Section 4 - Driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs…

I have noticed that some specials take a vast majority of their kit home. therefor this is my scenario. a police special has been working a Friday night and clocks out at AM. After getting home, the wife is in bed and there is nothing on the television. The man can not settle after the excitement of last night, therefor decides to walk the dog. However, why just walk the dog when you can don the uniform and put in some time. Keep the streets save and walk the dog right? so no radio and just basic kit the man sets of for a couple of hours. Is he braking any law, bar from stupidity? and would he be impersonating a police officer?

On mobile patrol with colleague - observed a vehicle driving around an estate in circles and then go through a red light. Pull the vehicle over a short distance away. Driver immediately confrontational - huffing and puffing about being stopped, etc trying to walk off... Explain the reason for the stop - the fact that he's gone through a red light and also one of his brakelight is out. Driver goes off his head calling me; "piece of s---", etc stating he did not go through a red light, had no right to stop him etc and tries to walk away. I replied; "Excuse me?! What did you just say?!" Driver; "You heard me!" squaring up. So said; "Right, come and sit in the back of …

Hi read part of this in another topic but it didn't really answer my question. If a person has previously been barred from a store and returns to the store and steals again would you arrest them for theft of burglary. 1 example was a female who was barred from a store and a year later returned to the store and was again caught shoplifting. Another officer said it was not burglary as if the store knew the female was barred they should have asked her to leave and by not doing so gave her consent to be on the property. The problem with this was the female had changed her appearance and the CCTV operator said she didn't recognise the female until she spoke to her after bei…

Hey! If lets say, you're an "off duty/out of uniform" special, you get on a bus (and happened to brief your warrant badge to get on for free), you happen to get off at a bus stop besides a gay nightclub, and a group of 7 17-22 year old males start verbally abusing you with homophobic slurs... How would this situation be dealt with? 1 - Hope for the best, give them words of advice, and continue on with your night (hoping that they don't attack you, as its 7 v.s. 1 with no safety gear!), worse case scenario, you use your powers and call for units to come along. 2 - Ignore this, get down as much information including bus route, time, direction, and report it the next da…

I was reliably informed the other day that a ELEVEN kids from one class bunked off school to go swimming in the baking temperatures we've had this week. My aunt is concerned that her son, my cousin, may be thinking of doing the same thing. Unfortunately for him he's the one that always gets caught and she'd like to find out where the school stands in law with regards to anything happening to them when they should be at school. Apparently the school do not take register in individual classes so unless the teachers have a keen eye and a good brain for faces they don't spot the ones that are missing. What are the laws for schools regarding making sure the kids stay in? If …

You're off duty driving along quite happily when the driver of the car behind you starts talking on their phone. What would you do if A) It was stop-start traffic? B) You are at a junction, waiting to pull out? I've had this happen a lot lately and it really bugs me, and I'm curious what you guys would do

Hi all, I was watching Traffic Cops recently (I thank that was what it was. It was a repeat anyway), and the officer pulled over a car with writing on the windscreen. It was being driven for a test drive by a potential buyer, with the salesman sitting in the front passenger seat, but the writing was on the driver's side of the windscreen and was obscuring the driver's view. The officer had stern words with the passenger (the salesman), as he had applied the writing, but it was the driver of the vehicle who got the £30 fine because he was in charge of the vehicle, and was therefore responsible for the roadworthiness of said vehicle. In the end, they cleaned the writing o…

Here`s one for us to think about : Fred needs some fast cash. He gets a bottle of generic non-prescription medication and puts it in a big clear plastic bag. He hides this in his boxer pants and goes to the city centre on a Saturday night. Fred intends to sell the medication to naive, drunken students stating that it is Ecstacy. Fred knows full well that the pills are NOT Ecstacy. PC Dave is on duty in the city centre and has cause to stop and search Fred. He recovers the bag of medication and suspects it is illegal drugs. He arrests Fred on suspicion of Possession with intent to supply. Fred is interviewed and states the medication is Paracetomol for his own person…

Hi again, This has just come into my head because it's happened to someone I know and is now in a few of the papers. Someone buys drugs from a dealer (in this case 3 men are arrested), takes said drugs and then ends up hospitalised. The dealers are arrested on suspicion of supplying a controlled substance and released on bail. Afterwards, the person who bought the drugs, dies because of this. Is there any further charge that can be applied to those arrested (if, of course, they are guilty), such as death by something? (I'm basing this assumption on, for example if someone hits someone with their car, they get arrested for dangerous driving. Victim later dies as a result…

Here's an interesting one... A member of pub staff has turned up for duty on their first day. As a member of staff they have used the staff parking area which has wheel clamping signs in operation. The member of staff does not think anything of this because they are now staff, however comes out later to find that their car has been clamped. He/She contacts the company and gives them details and the pub manager even speaks with the company which he employs and they state that they will not remove the clamp. They state that the fine must be paid and that they can appeal this later on. The member of staff believes that this has been unlawfully applied (because they have …
