Not sure if this should be here or in the law section, but here goes: Bob takes John's ipod without John's consent, and tells him he is taking it to use for a week. John tells Bob that he doesn't want him to take his ipod, but Bob takes it anyway, telling him tough, he's having it for a week and he will bring it back at the end of that week. John reports the matter to the police. Strictly speaking, Bob hasn't committed theft, as he doesn't intend to permanently deprive John of the ipod, so the points to prove aren't completely met. However it was taken against John's will. If you were presented with this scenario, what would be your course of action?

Morning All, Completely hyperthetical - something I was thinking about when driving in this morning. Two people in a car driving in the sticks, possibly no mobile phone reception, very far from anywhere. The insured driver has a medical emergency, could be a heart attack, seizure but needs medical attention ASAP. Emergency Services unavailable or the distance is too great for any good. The passenger is not insured but has a licence and is squeaky clean. If said person was to drive uninsured due to extreme circumstances, is a certain level of discretion and leniency taken by the authorities?

So obviously, if it was on a public road it would be simple to report it to the DVLA and get it removed. But if you are part of a housing complex that has a private car park for residents and there is a vehicle that has been left there untaxed for months could the DVLA do anything? The car park has access to a main road, so is it classed as a public road and therefore the RTA apply?

This is a difficult one to explain but here goes; Your, as a SC, are on foot patrol in a very quiet area late at night with a reglar colleague on a large estate and you happen to catch brief sounds coming from a dark lane as you walk past it. You curious and so you flash your light into the lane where you see a man lying on the floor in a pool of blood. You and your colleague rush to the man who says "i've been stabbed....it's only just happened". You notice that the man is clutching his abdomen area where blood seems to be seeping from. Your regular colleague immediately gets on the radio reporting the alleged attack whilst you stand up in somewhat of a frustration to…

Hypothetical Scenario. What on earth would you do if you met a victim of a crime you dealt with off-duty? Especially if the person (If at work or with family or just alone) started talking to you? And the same applied to offenders for the question as well.

If a member of the public complains about a trivial offence, to what extent are the police obliged to investigate/charge? For example: Walking down the street, on duty, you see a man reach into someone else's garden and intentionally pull a single leave off a large lavender hedge. He sniffs the leaf, enjoys the delicious aroma, puts it in a bin, and continues on his way. The home owner is in the garden and runs out to you: "That man just damaged my hedge - arrest him!" What would be the possible outcomes, and how would you handle the situation? (Obviously you use your excellent communication skills to get the home owner to see reason. For the sake of this example,…

Your thoughts would be appreciated guys even if this is somewhat minor... You drive down a street looking for a parking space only to find there are no spaces and it's a dead end. The driver in front of you puts his car into reverse as it's too tight to do a u-turn. You do likewise as does the car behind you. The driver of the car behind this one however is stopped in the road (engine running)and speaking on her mobile phone. When the driver behind you gets out of her car and asks if she would move, the person replies cheekily with "I'm on the phone". All vehicles are now sitting in reverse unable to move because this woman will not move until she has finished her call. …

a youth of about 18/19 riding a pocket motorbike in the street with a baby of about 18/24 months is ripping up the road, up and down no helmet, tshirt etc what do you do? grab him and take him to the station and take the bike? grab his parents for letting this happen in the first place and call in to have the baby taken away? give him a ticking off and let him go? or would you follow another course of action?

Real scenario: I was in London and witnessed two women with prepared paper flowers thrusting them at people on Westminster Bridge (though I have seen similar operating in Leicester Square in the past). They would approach people, even follow/stop them and thrust a flower into an automatically outreaching hand (or even forcibly place them through clothing) saying 'for you darling', then demand money. When no money has been given, the women's demeanour changes to one of unpleasantness and the flower is snatched back with a scowl. Today I heard one say 'it's for charity today darling for all the poor children'. I couldn't let that one pass - I said loudly, and clearly, 'yea…

Hello All I was recently on a bus travelling from Barrow In Furness to Kendal. I boarded the bus and went to the top deck, a group of 11 youths who looked around 17-20 years of age also boarded. Throughout the journey the group of youths behaviour was a nightmare, the whole journey they were shouting, swearing, throwing stuff around and talking really really explicitly, at one point i heard that one of the male youths appeared to be exposing himself. I could see that many of the other passengers (including parents with children present) felt very uncomfortable as many moved down to the bottom deck of the bus I was sat desperatly wanting to say something but i thaught …

I was on foot in the West End this evening (off duty) and once again witnessed the antics of the 'Critical Mass' Friday night ride... They were up to their old tricks and had gridlocked Cambridge Circus by filling the junction with bicycles -- they refer to as 'corking', as you can imagine it's not very popular with motorists. The tactic goes beyond ensuring the safety of the procession and is designed to do nothing more than inconvenience motorists. Ironically they we're also cutting up the pedestrians who were trying to cross around the edge of the junction, red lights are seemingly a total irrelevance. I'm familiar with the legal background to the inability of the ME…

Student club night at an unnamed venue. Event finishes, drunk people leave and begin to bundle onto buses without paying, going over capacity. Bus driver switches off engine and refuses to go anywhere unless this is sorted. Its around 5am, everyone is tired and wants to go home. Officer (off duty) identifies himself, and asks driver what he can do to solve the problem. Driver says he wants everyone off bus and to come on again one at a time, paying. Officer manages to get everyone off the bus and back on in an orderly manner, having produced warrant card/badge and clearly identified himself to all. Driver says bus is full to capacity, at which point several drunk male s…

Quite an odd one today but hopefully you guys and girls will be able to give me some suggestions / advice. Background: There is a dual carriageway on my beat which is bordered by residential properties; one side of the road has a public footpath which happens to be large enough to fit a car comfortably on it. Separating the road from the footpath is a long line of grass verges with drop curbs approximately every other house. At one end of the public footpath there is a number of bollards to prevent cars from driving straight on to it (this it would seem has had little impact) and the other is fenced off with a set of traffic lights / crossing point. The problem: A resi…

This is a real situation that I found myself in today. I was crossing the road minding my own bussiness when and individual steps off the pavement and walks right up to me. He stops only inches away from my face, takes a deep breath and blows in my face. He grins and turns to walk away. I ask him if he is alright. His behavior was unusual and I am genuinely concerned that there is something wrong with him. He then asks me what my problem is. I tell him that I haven't got a problem and once again ask if he is ok. He then tells me to move along. I just stood there and held my ground. He repeats the instruction to move along then asks me if I would like sparking out. I calml…
