I follow a non league football club up here in Scotland, at a match recently a bottle was thrown on to the park. I am not yet a police officer and have not had any training, so i did not want to get involved, the individual was identified. My question is for serving specials/regs, if you are in this off duty scenario what would you do? My initial reaction would be to detain the person until some on duty officers were able to come and take control of the situation, its probably useful to point out that in scotland our non league games do no require police/stewarding (even though there is a need), and as such in a large crowd i believe it may be intimidating to reveal you…

I am a serving special, during the summer I work in the UK at summer camps as a team leader. Now my understanding is that I am duty bound to put myself "on" when required. Now summer camp itself is 6 weeks long would I actually use my powers whilst there to apprehend a youth at camp (all above the age of 10) if for arguments sake a crime had been committed? and, am i special without my badge?

To break it down, a friend posted on facebook that she had been allowed to drive a recently passed drivers vehicle in a empty car park, for which he allowed her to. She is on a provisional. Now am I right in thinking that she is breaking the law as shes not insured on the vehicle and is only a provisional driver and therefore should not be at the wheel, unless she is insured and either having a full uk licence or with a driver who is at least 21 and been driving for 3 years? what offences are being committed and what punishment would happen if they were caught? Would they both get £70 fine and 3 points, and as the vehicle is not insured to her only to him, would it be s…

You start your evening shift with the usual vehicle safety checks before you leave the station one evening. Everything is working fine and the fuel tank is full from the last shift so off you go. Happy days... So, 20 minutes into your shift you spot a defective headlamp on the vehicle which just pulled out in front of you. You do your checks, stop the vehicle and ask the very co-operative driver to accompany you into your vehicle. Whilst in the car, you explain your going to issue a producer and you also start explaining the VDRS to him. He suddenly says... "So you'r going to issue me that 'ticket' when you have a faulty headlamp yourself"? You quite naturally say "Wha…

I've been curious about this one for quite some time, say you're walking down the street past a group of youths and one of them suddenly pretends to punch or headbutt you for the sake of seeing you flinch. Me being me I would end up flinching and making myself look stupid. Has he done anything wrong

Was witness to a minor collision today, which resulted in both cars parked up in a car park. The driver of the car that was struck was visibly upset, and the driver of the 'offending' vehicle (and his wife) were both aggresive, agitated and very verbal. They had essentially rammed the poor woman because she would move out of their way in traffic. I suddenly thought, what if you were off-duty and happened to be in that car park at the time and had witnessed what happened. But, in this imaginary scenario the offending driver is quite obviously drunk. By that I mean body language, speech and the fact that he smells like a bottle of Jack Daniels. I am not in the service yet…

I was in London yesterday and witnessed the following, so just interested to see what you guys make of it! We walked from Buckingham Palace up Constitution Hill towards Hyde Park Corner. The road was closed to traffic, and as we were walking, seven "travellers" came gallopping up the road from behind us on their pony and traps. One was lagging way behind, and as we got to the top of the road, the DPG had pulled him. A mounted officer was giving him a rollocking saying it was pedestrianised today and they could have caused a serious accident. DPG were giving him a ticket of some sort. The most amazing thing was the fact that, when questioned, he stated they had riden t…

What happens if a conjoined twin commits an offence? What if its a serious offence that requires a custodial sentance (eg murder)? (the other twin is not involved in the offence. For arguments sake, say s/he was asleep)

This is my first Scenario post, but ive been thinking about this for a while now and would just like some opinions. You're an off duty special or reg and you notice a known male in a vehicle outside your house, that you know is stolen. You know this male and hes a regular offender in the area in which you live. You're about to get into your own vehicle to go out and just happen to go on the same route of this stolen vehicle and notice that the male drives onto a field and is about to set fire to the vehicle and walk away. The male is on his own, and you're with a friend and happen to be carrying a pair of handcuffs with you. What would you do? Also, can you legally det…

Hi guys, looked through some of the threads but couldnt find any concrete answers so here goes, a couple of scenarios. Your're off duty travelling in a busy underground carriage, you come across : a). i. One person drinking alcohol, (getting accusing looks from MOPs) who you reasonably believe you can deal with by yourself. What do you do? What do you say if upon showing your warrant he/she says 'what you gonna do?' ii. 2 or more people drinking alcohol who you would feel uncomfortable dealing with, same scenario as above. b). More serious than above, an individual or group drinking alcohol and being quite aggressive/intimdating to member(s) of the public i.e.…

Hiya, first time post, so I hope I'm doing it right :D My hypothetical scenario is as follows: Imagine you're out in a marked car and you clearly see a driver talking on their mobile phone (you are also able to get a good idea of the colour & size of the phone). You stop the car, point out the offence and CAUTION but the driver denies all responsibility, stating that they don't even *own* a mobile phone. As you are certain that they were talking on their mobile, you state that you are going to give them a ticket anyway and that they can argue it out in court. The driver isn't happy but reluctantly agrees to accept the ticket, stating that they definitely will go to…

Heres a situation that erupted last week when i was on my way home late on a saturday night. Oh and im not an sc as of yet but awaiting vetting clearence and a training start date. Following a saloon vehicle on my 600cc motorbike in a 30 speed limit zone. It is a single carriage way in a built up area at around 2230hrs. The road turns left through a heavily built up area with a central reservation oncoming (the keep left bollards, normally allowing pedestrians to cross). A moped rapidly accelerates up to my rear and sits behind me, about 2ft off my rear on the right, at this point i can tell he is probably young and an overconfident inexperienced driver. He rapidly s…

I was getting onto the tram near home (not on duty) when I noticed a man (IC2) dressed quite shabbily with a high visibility vest on under his open coat getting on as well. The bottom of the vest was clearly marked 'Metropolitan Police' with the current logo. He didn't look like a police officer but I wasn't sure what I should do. I couldn't remember the local police number and considered ringing 999 but didn't feel it was an ememergency. I didn't want to approach him as I wouldn't know what to say and would be risking my own safety. I even thought about the anti-terrorist hotline as it was very suspicious. In the end I did nothing and when I turned around, he was go…

Interested to know what everyones take would be on the following: Someone is sleep walking (i.e. they are absolutely asleep, though their eyes may be open) and walks out of their home and smashes a window of a shop and takes something, then walks back to bed and remembers nothing in the morning... Have they committed an offence? As far as I understand it theft would be along the lines of "A person who dishonestly appropriates property belonging to another with the intention to permanently deprive." However if the person was asleep and therefore not aware of their actions, not in direct control, can they be held liable for those actions?!? :D Any thoughts?

What is the case for a special that has caught someone on Friday, as the famous police poster says, the assailant would be in court on Monday but the special would be at work. what would happen? would you take a holiday? if I where to work a lot of weekends for the police, I would soon end up with no holidays from all my court days.
