Police chief says 'Twitterthon' showed average 24 hours for force as it dealt with 2,626 incidents Sir Peter Fahy Greater Manchester Police’s 24-hour Twitterthon ‘encapsulated an average day’ in the force, according to Chief Constable Sir Peter Fahy. The force dealt with 2,626 incidents during the period which ended at 5am this morning. During the 24 hour project they tweeted details of every incident as it happened. Among the calls was a patient at Stockport’s Stepping Hill Hospital who dialled 999 demanding a lift home when her daughter had failed to collect her. In another incident a mother from Clayton called because her daughter was refusing to go to school.…

Greater Manchester Police bosses fear yet another round cuts which could see the force lose a further 500 officers. The force has already shed around 1,500 police posts as part of £134m in cost savings required by the government by 2015. GMP bosses say another round of cuts requiring a further 25 per cent from the budget is on the way - which would entail the loss of around 500 police posts. The move was slammed as unacceptable by the deputy police and crime commissioner. The force strength stood at 8,000-plus in 2005 when the then chief constable, Mike Todd, demanded the cash to boost numbers to 11,000. He was slapped down by the Labour government. When the coalitio…

By Josh Leob - Police officers are being forced to forgo food all day in some cases because they are too busy to eat, an MP has claimed. Simon Danczuk, the Labour MP for Rochdale, said he feared for the welfare of officers who had told him excessive demands on their time meant they were effectively having to either fast while on duty or grab junk food and hurriedly consume it "on the run". Mr Danczuk told PoliceOracle.com: "That is what has been said to us by serving officers. It's a pretty desperate situation." He added: "It concerns me that if they can't stop and have something to eat they are clearly overworked, and they won't be performing at their best. If…

Three men have been arrested in London by police officers investigating possible terrorism offences. The men, aged 24, 21 and 25, are suspected of being concerned in the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism. The men were arrested in central London and are in custody. A search has taken place at a business in west London and there are searches taking place at four residential addresses in north-west London. These arrests come after five other men were arrested on Tuesday 7 October. Two of the five were released earlier on Monday. The other three remain in custody at police stations in central London after magistrates granted a warrant of further…

Controversial proposals for direct entry into the Police Service at inspector, superintendent and chief constable levels have been given the green light to proceed, the government has confirmed. In a statement to MPs, Minister for Policing and Justice Damian Green said he remained “committed to implementing fast-track and direct entry schemes to attract the best talent” following a consultation exercise carried out earlier this year. He added that the schemes will start to be rolled out in 2014.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2823742/Police-wasted-100000-spying-on-sick-officer.html Sounds like another force with a brilliant welfare department that looks after its officers, and the usual mealy mouthed comment you would expect trying to justify wasting £100,000.

Pictures taken in the aftermath of the accident in central London show the po…
