The disappearance of £60,000 of Indian jewellery from safe deposit boxes owned by a popular British Asian musician is being investigated by police. Johnny Kalsi, of the drum band the Dhol Foundation, believes the gold was taken from a branch of NatWest in Feltham, west London, some time in 2009. He first realised the two boxes were missing on 23 November when he went to put some more items in them. NatWest has since acknowledged that it cannot find the valuables. The bank has apologised to Mr Kalsi for any distress caused. He has also been asked to supply NatWest with a full list of the items in the two boxes. Mr Kalsi said what had happened cast doubt on the ba…

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-29172812 Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has called for Police and Crime Commissioners (PCC) to be scrapped. It comes after the Commissioner for South Yorkshire Shaun Wright refused to step down despite calls to do so from Home Secretary Theresa May. Mr Clegg told BBC Radio Sheffield Mr Wright should go and the PCC role should be reformed. Theresa May is facing calls from MPs for emergency legislation so that PCCs could be forced to leave their job. Earlier on Friday, Mr Wright again made it clear he will not resign in connection with the Rotherham child abuse scandal. Mr Wright, who used to head children's services at Rotherha…

http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-29105022 The number of constabularies in England and Wales should be cut to save money, a senior police leader has said. Police Superintendents' Association president Irene Curtis said there were "too many chief constables and too many police and crime commissioners". The 43-force structure wasted millions of pounds and had not been reformed for 40 years, she said. Policing minister Mike Penning said forced mergers would reduce the quality of neighbourhood policing. Ch Supt Curtis was speaking ahead of the association's annual conference in Warwickshire. The former firearms commanding officer said: "It is increasingly obvious that we do no…

A Met Police officer caught on camera punching a woman three times in the head has been convicted of assault. PC James Kiddie, 45, is now facing the end of his career after attacking the woman in a Regent Street branch of clothing brand Uniqlo. Shocking CCTV footage shows Kiddie pushing Sarah Reed, 30, into a chair, grabbing her by the hair and hitting her in the head as she lies on the floor, before leaning on her neck until backup arrives minutes later. Kiddie claimed Ms Reed had bitten him after telling him she was infected with the AIDS virus. District Judge Elizabeth Roscoe, sitting at Westminster Magistrates Court, said: 'I can see no real pause between the strik…

Provost Road: Police officer was stabbed during call to disturbance in dundee. A man who stabbed a police officer with an eight-inch kitchen knife during a disturbance in Dundee has avoided being sent to prison. Jamie Morrison stabbed PC Scott Kidd on the hand as the officer tried to defend himself. PC Kidd tried to douse Morrison in CS spray in a bid to stop him and raised his hand to cover his head from the impending attack. Morrison, who had moments earlier told the officers he was "going to kill them", then "deliberately struck" the officer with the blade. But despite a sheriff branding the offence "extremely serious", Morrison walked free from Dundee Sheriff …
