http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/law-and-order/11181169/Police-must-record-race-of-everyone-they-restrain-says-Theresa-May.html Theresa May, the Home Secretary, has been accused of burdening police with red tape after ordering officers to record the ethnic background of every person they physically restrain. Mrs May has told police chiefs to launch a system which will force officers to take a note of the race and age of every person against whom they use force, including applying hand-cuffs. Last night a backlash was already beginning to emerge among police ranks, who claimed the Mrs May’s orders mean police will be required to complete potentially millions of n…

The trial of a vicar accused of conducting a "matrimonial conveyor belt" of sham weddings has collapsed after the judge accused immigration officers of lying on oath. The Rev Nathan Ntege, 55, was said to have married almost 500 bogus couples at a church in south-east London. But the judge ended the trial, alleging "bad faith and serious misconduct on the part of the prosecution". The case against six people accused alongside Mr Ntege has also collapsed. The vicar, from Thornton Heath, was on trial at Inner London Crown Court on 14 counts of facilitating a breach of immigration law and one count of fraud. The prosecution claimed immigration officials became suspiciou…

Officers reluctantly agree to free the 26-year-old, from Salford, on bail but take to Twitter to blast 'difficult and time-wasting' prisoner. Sackville Road, in Manchester, where the man was arrested Police in Manchester were forced to release a drunk who had been ranting and raving in English - because he insisted on a Welsh interpreter. The 26-year-old, who claimed to have Welsh roots but had showed no ability to speak the language, was locked up after being found the worse for wear and causing a disturbance in Manchester city centre. The man, said to have been "bladdered", was thrown into a city centre police cell where he continued to "remonstrate" with offic…

Watch: Greater Manchester to trial 'fourth service' aimed at reducing pressure on 999 responders The scheme, launched in Manchester, Salford and Wigan, will recruit 30 people to answer 'low-priority' calls - and if it's a success, could be rolled out county-wide A ‘fourth service’ will aim to take pressure off police and paramedics in Greater Manchester. In a national first a pilot scheme will be launched in Manchester, Salford, and Wigan, at a cost of £900,000 over the next three months. The fire brigade landed an extra £3.67m in government funding on Friday and if the pilot is successful that cash will be used for the project to go county-wide next year. Great…

Hard-hitting footage of a fatal collision in Norfolk has been released by police in a bid to get motorcyclists and drivers to think seriously about road safety. The dramatic film, captured on a headcam fitted to the rider’s helmet, shows the moment a car crosses into the path of Norwich motorcyclist David Holmes who was killed on the A47 at Honingham in June last year (2013). David’s story, a video featuring clips including the collision as well as an interview with his mother Brenda, has been produced by police with the full support of all his family, who hope the campaign will prevent further deaths. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xq2xStb0R-c Viewers of the video …

Two detention officers who watchdog found used justified force against a violent detainee are criticised by deputy chief. Custody staff have been exonerated by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), which investigated injuries a mentally ill man who was behaving aggressively in a cell sustained to his eye. But Northumbria Police has still given the staff concerned a formal warning and reasigned them to other duties. The IPCC found the level of force used by detention officers (DOs) Mark Brown and John Dixon was justified after an unnamed 25-year old detainee - referred to by the watchdog as "Man A" - persistently threatened violence before appearing to…

I know about our terrible sentences, but is this normal for GBH? I know it was only one punch apparently, but the victim's life has changed forever, it's not like it's just a broken leg or something. I think 2 years is really lenient for something like this, especially as he only served 6 months. I thought people couldn't be let out on a tag if they were jailed for a serious/violent offence such as GBH. I think it's truly shocking.
