Curriculum Vitae (CV) Writing The benefits of being able to write and produce a comprehensive CV cannot be over-stated. You can be as good or better than the next person applying for the same position, but if your CV is poor then so are your chances of success. The idea of the CV is to let prospective employers know all about you, that is the parts of your life and experience that are relevant to them. Here lies the secret, you must not allow yourself to be carried away entering matters that are not relevant to the position you are applying for. In fact, the shorter CV that comes directly to the point is far more likely to be read by the employer than the one that …

Resettlement into Civilian Life
by Police Community +- 2 replies

Resettlement into Civilian Life This section is aimed primarily at those considering leaving the Police Service prior to completing full pensionable service. If you are retiring with a pension, you might prefer to look in the 'Retirement' section under 'Careers'. The decision to leave the Police Service prior to pension can be difficult, as despite what others might say, the grass is not always greener and neither is the remuneration! Perhaps before making a final decision, see our 'Options to stay' page, or discuss your options with a trusted line manager. The Police Service is constantly trying to reduce the number of people leaving before their retirement date, an…

Seeking Employment

Seeking Employment Some leave the police service to retire in the traditional sense. Others look for either full or part time work. Being relatively young, even at full retiring age, further employment and even in effect a second career, are perfectly feasible for ex-police employees. Whatever employment environment we wish to move into when we leave the Service, there are several main ways of securing employment: The 'Old Boys' Network' Police employees form strong bonds and high levels of trust between each other and it is quite natural that this might lead to job offers from those who have left before you. However, if this is likely to be your favoured route, i…

Hi. I have 18 years service, joined 1998 & have been on a career break since 2016 so completely out of it procedure wise. Had neck problems for years & over the last few years losing strength in arms/hands. I've recently had surgery on my neck with c5 c6 fusion. Following surgery I can't see myself back on reactive duty but not sure where to go from here? Would I be considered for ill health retirement? Do I have to request ill health retirement ? Surely this will be a better option than to resign ? I'm on the 1987 pension but wasn't old enough to be tapered so wouldn't have access to my pension until I'm 60. (I'm 42) Due to c…

Hi everyone and many thanks for letting me join this forum. I have been away from front line Policing for nearly 3 years and in Feb 2018 and after a meeting with the SMP he recommended Medical Retirement due to my complex issues around PTSD. HR and the DCC for my force also agreed this and i retire from my force on the 18th June 2018. I am 48 years of age and have 20 years and 1 month of service. But what happens now? Any help would be really appreciated. Many thanks - Dazzlar

Hi guys, seeking advice....i've a little over 12 years service. In the past year i've had three operations on my spine and, while I can still walk, i'm in near constant pain. While it's certainly not ideal, I'm in the process of trying to get a medical retirement but the pension isn't great. From my reading of the pension rules, I can work so long as it isn't over an average of 33 hours per week. I'm looking at a job with the border force working on the passport control desk at a local airport. The job is advertised as part time. From April until September it's a 36 hour week. The rest of the time it's an 18 hour week, so the average over the year is something like 24 ho…

Hi Can anyone help me with this one please as I cannot find a definitive answer Is it possible to claim an IOD award if you retire normally after 30 years as I have been deemed permanently disabled by the SMP but have unfortunately been retained by the Chief. I have almost 29 years service so I will have to stick it out and suffer with the injury along with other medical conditions for another year if necessary but wanted to know if anyone knew whether once retired normally and not medically that I could claim for the IOD ? I know that I can retire now and get an immediate pension due to being deemed permanently disabled but this is obviously without The…

Hello All. I am wondering if anyone could shed any light on the above subject. I will be short and sweet. Sergeant with 23 years service, retired from my force in September of last year. I was diagnosed with PTSD and the job has admitted that it is an IOD. Today I have received my certificate for my injury award which Kier are processing as we speak. I am in Band 2, 48% disabled and it is permenant. Throughout my time suffering and battling on at work, when off sick and during the retirement and IOD process I received very little support. I loved my job and was reasonably good at it. I believe that if I had been given some help when I asked a few years a…
