A Royal Navy medic was jailed for seven months today after he refused to draw a gun because he disagreed with the war in Afghanistan. Leading Medical Advisor Michael Lyons disobeyed the order by an officer to pick up an SA80 as part of rifle training on the grounds that it was 'against his moral beliefs.' Lyons, 25, told a courtmartial he became disillusioned with the service after reading about troops killing civilians on whistle-blowing website Wikileaks. He had already applied for, but had been denied, conscientious objector status when he was ordered to undertake the rifle training before a tour to Afghanistan. Lyons was due to begin a two-week rifle course at HMS…

So after the post regarding JSA experiences I thought it might be fun to share the jobs we have had to endure in those times of desperation even if you only put up with it for a week Here are mine 1) Charity Street Fundraising - awful, just plain awful. I lasted 8 days 2) Document Sorter - basically pulling paper clips and staples out of massive amounts of archived documents that needed to be scanned. Boring, mind numbing but I did date one of the girls for a while 3) Telesales - of all things I was trying to sell black bin bags to restaurants and offices So what other ones have we got for the list ...

A very interesting (and slightly hilarious) interview with Hugh Grant and Paul McMullan of NotW about how Mr Grant uncovered the phone hacking scandal. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-14052690 I'm surprised the Beeb let him get away with the comments about Thatcher. Fair play to him! (For attention of the mods, might I propose a thread merge for all topics about NotW phone hacking? I didn't feel this post really belonged in any of the ones currently running!)

Source BBC If this is true then it's disgusting. You have to wonder just what sort of press we have saddled ourselves with in this country given that some elements appear to be prepared to sink to any depths in order to get their 'scoop'. It also beats me how anybody can buy these rags and in that way play a part in creating the market for this sort of stuff.

What exactly is this all about and what is its value? Also without going into too much deal how do they do it?

The EU's flagship commitment to free movement was 'in tatters' last night as Denmark imposed border controls to keep out criminals and illegal immigrants from other parts of Europe. The nation was accused of breaching the Schengen treaty, which allows free movement of goods and people and includes all EU member states except Britain and Ireland. Denmark deployed extra 50 customs officers at crossings with Germany and Sweden yesterday, saying the move was needed to fight border-hopping criminals and illegal immigrants within the Schengen zone. A further 50 officers will be added by the end of the year. German holidaymakers were urged to boycott Denmark in protest. Al…

I hope there is a happy conclusion. But most odd to just slip out of his base alone. The Ministry of Defence can confirm that a British serviceman is missing in Afghanistan. An extensive operation to locate him is under way. The individual is based in central Helmand and was reported missing in the early hours of this morning. His next of kin have been informed and they will be updated as the operation continues. We will not confirm any further details at present. MoD A British soldier has gone missing in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed. A massive search involving aircraft and ground troops has been launched after he went missing from h…

For anyone who didn't see it the link here is to the ITV1 site giving an overview of the programme that Helen presented. Her bravery can only be admired, I have to say, considering she only lost her husband, Gary Newlove, four years ago. We've personally suffered anti social behaviour over the years, damage to our vehicles and property and just general unwelcome, nasty behaviour, which thankfully appears to have ceased after intervention by the local SNT and local authority. I'm sure there are other users of this forum who have too. The reason for this post is to discuss what we, or you, think the answer might be to solving it and nipping it in the bud before it ac…

I was talking to a colleague last night who mentioned this new homemade heroin substitute he had been reading about. Apparently it's use is massive in Russia and fortunately does not appear to have made it into other countries as of yet. It is made from mixing together commonly available products and has the same effects as heroin (not as long lasting by all accounts) and is much cheaper to produce than actual heroin. It does however have some massive effects on the human body. I'm not going to post any links as the videos can only be described as extremely graphic and disturbing. Anyone interested in seeing what this stuff does to the users do a YouTube search for kr…

Motorcyclist dies on ride protesting helmet law (AP) ONONDAGA, N.Y. - Police say a motorcyclist participating in a protest ride against helmet laws in upstate New York died after he flipped over the bike's handlebars and hit his head on the pavement. The accident happened Saturday afternoon in the town of Onondaga, in central New York near Syracuse. State troopers tell The Post-Standard of Syracuse that 55-year-old Philip A. Contos of Parish, N.Y., was driving a 1983 Harley Davidson with a group of bikers who were protesting helmet laws by not wearing helmets. Troopers say Contos hit his brakes and the motorcycle fishtailed. The bike spun out of control, and Cont…

A paramedic has been criticised for not cutting short a break to help a woman who had suffered a heart attack. The ambulance service said staff cannot be disturbed during breaks Catherine Cowie, 50, died two days after collapsing in Fraserburgh. An ambulance technician was on the scene within four minutes, but a paramedic did not attend with him because he was on a lunch break. Some cardiac drugs can only be administered by a paramedic. The Scottish Ambulance Service said staff could not be disturbed during breaks. However, it said staff could choose whether or not to attend calls during break periods. Mother-of-three Mrs Cowie collapsed in her Fraserburgh home, w…
