http://www.oregonlive.com/today/index.ssf/2012/12/police_injured_instructor_foug.html Gravely wounded by an arrow fired into his head, a Wyoming college instructor still managed to wrestle with his 25-year-old son who carried out the attack and give his students time to flee the classroom, say police who hailed the actions as heroic. More grisly details of the horrific murder-suicide in Wyoming came to light Saturday, a day after the younger man killed his father's live-in girlfriend and then barged into his father's computer science class and shot him in the head with a high-powered bow and arrow. A campaign to radically reform and open up the secretive workings of the powerful local authority governing the City of London has been launched by a diverse group whose supporters include activists from the Occupy movement, clerics and the Tory MP David Davis. In one of the most robust challenges yet faced by the deeply conservative local authority that governs the Square Mile – derided by some critics as the UK's "last rotten borough" – the City Reform Group will back candidates who sign up to a series of pledges during elections to the City of London Corporation this March. The non-party-political group claims that the corporation is "failing to live up to its le…

"I was horribly shocked, but I thought that with some therapy he'd get over it," says Sue, 42. World Aids Day: the time for scaring people into action is over The HIV and Aids epidemic looks very different to how it did on the first World Aids Day 24 years ago. Today, the number of Aids-related deaths is dropping, as is the global incidence of new infections. Additionally, the number of people receiving treatment has increased dramatically and is still rising. Drugs that were experimental on the first World Aids Day are now standard. Many of these drugs are now available in cheaper generic forms that make them more affordable for people in low-income countries. Indeed, on this year's World Aids Day on 1 December, it is hard to believe that there was ever an argum…

A Merseyrail guard has been found guilty of causing the death of a 16-year-old girl who died after falling under a train at a Liverpool station. Georgia Varley died when she fell between the carriage and platform at James Street station in October 2011. Christopher McGee, 45, had denied manslaughter but was found guilty at Liverpool Crown Court. He signalled for the driver to depart as Miss Varley, who was drunk, stood on the platform leaning against the train. The prosecution said McGee should have been able to see that she was in an "intoxicated state". But he told the jury he thought the sixth form student was moving away from the train when he gave the signal to …
