DNA testing frees man who lived on death row for 15 years | World news | The Guardian Every morning Damon Thibodeaux wakes up in his temporary digs in Minneapolis and wonders when his newfound freedom is going to come crashing down. "You think you're going to wake up and find it was just a dream," he says. When he stepped out of Angola jail in Louisiana several guards were at the gate to wish him well, addressing him for the first time in 16 years as "Mr Thibodeaux". "No offence," he said, "but I hope I never see you again." He walked out as the 300th prisoner in the US to be freed as a result of DNA testing and one of 18 exonerated from death row. With the help of sci…

Plumes of smoke rise over cities in Gaza as Israel steps up its offensive Link to this video Egypt's prime minister, Hisham Kandil, has arrived in Gaza, as Israel and Palestinian militants continue to exchange fire. Egypt is pushing ahead in efforts to mediate a truce between Israel and Hamas, and Kandil said Cairo would "spare no effort" to achieve a ceasefire. But on a visit to a Gaza hospital, he blamed Israel for the conflict. "This tragedy cannot pass in silence and the world should take responsibility in stopping this aggression," he said. Rockets fired from Gaza hit several sites in southern Israel on Friday morning, shortly after Kandil arrived in the Palestin…

A police whistleblower is facing an inquiry into alleged gross misconduct and has been told not to use Twitter after raising concerns about the reform of the service. James Patrick, a constable in the Metropolitan police, is one of four officers to have been encouraged or told not to use social media by senior managers at forces in England and Wales in the last few weeks. Patrick has spent months highlighting on a blog and on Twitter his concerns about how he believes cuts to the police service and reforms will affect public safety. His lawyer Karen Todner said he had tried to raise these issues with his senior officers to no avail. She said: "He is a whistleblower and…

Amsterdam to create 'scum villages' Amsterdam is to create "Scum villages" where nuisance neighbours and anti-social tenants will be exiled from the city and rehoused in caravans or containers with "minimal services" under constant police supervision. The plan echoes a proposal from Geert Wilders, the leader of a populist Dutch Right-wing party Photo: AFP/GETTY By Bruno Waterfield 4:05PM GMT 03 Dec 2012 Holland's capital already has a special hit squad of municipal officials to identify the worst offenders for a compulsory six month course in how to behave. Social housing problem families or tenants who do not show an improvement or refuse to go to the special uni…

Who, what, why: Why do police still use cassette tapes? A tiny number of music cassette tapes are sold in the UK every year, but police forces are still using millions of them. Why? For many people, the audio cassette tape conjures up memories of teenage mix tapes. But for many of the police forces in the UK, cassettes are still the primary format for recording interviews. An interview will result in a master tape being produced - duplicates are then submitted as evidence at court or disclosed to the defence. In 2011, The National Police Improvement Agency (NPIA) estimated that that up to 200,000 tapes are used by each force a year. There are currently 43 police f…

I have a facebook account and have 'liked' the work facebook page (Strathscotland). What strikes me is the sheer volume of the Jeremy Kyle brigade who post things like 'i was on my phone and yous gaive me 3 points, i pay yoor wages with my benefits' and 'i hate the polis, yous are rubbish' etc etc and moaning and whinging about us. What really gets me is folk going on slagging us rotten yet the force actively encourages complaints about officers. What a joke. Is every force page like this?
