Shifts victory for working mothers Working mothers were handed the legal right to refuse inconvenient shifts yesterday. A ground-breaking tribunal ruling will let any woman with young children claim she does not have to work early, late or at night. The new rights, under sexual discrimination laws, will be available to hundreds of thousands of women in both the public and private sectors. Firms with only small staffs will be exempt, but other employers will face major problems and extra costs trying to cater for mothers on their payroll. There is also likely to be anger and resentment among male colleagues and childless women who have to do the unpopular shifts. The …

Greetings, I'm interested in finding people who served in the Palestine Police during the British Mandate. My grandfather was stationed in Jerusalem. His name was Nicola or Naguib Anton. He was Greek and moved to Jerusalem from Cairo. I'm trying to find out what position he had, possibly chief, but that is the family rumor. He was also a Mason. Any masons out there? I have a picture of a large group of people standing in front of the police office. Send me your email and I would be happy to send you a copy. The admin said if more people are interested, he can had a header with Palestine Police. Looking forward to hearing from you! Nicole

English Defence League leader and founder Tommy Robinson has left the group, saying he has concerns over the "dangers of far-right extremism". The EDL organises protests across the UK against "radical Islam". Mr Robinson said it was still his aim to "counter Islamist ideology", although "not with violence but with better, democratic ideas". Several senior figures have quit, but an EDL spokesman said the group "will not die because they're walking away". He added that supporters would spend the next few weeks discussing how to proceed. The EDL, formed in 2009, has organised marches and demonstrations in several cities across the UK, which have seen sometimes violent c…

Quote - The home secretary and MI5 have warned about the terrorist threat from British residents fighting in Syria. But who are these young men who have gone to fight in another country's war - how did they get there, what are their long term goals and do they pose a threat to UK security? MI5 says there could be as many as 200 British fighters in Syria. With other Europeans, they make up around 10% of the foreign opposition forces, with most coming from Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and Libya. The BBC has learned there are a group of 20 young men from the UK who are fighting against forces allied to President Bashar al-Assad near Atma, on the Turkish border. One of the men,…

The "fastest ever" broadband speeds have been achieved in a test in London, raising hopes of more efficient data transfer via existing infrastructure. Alcatel-Lucent and BT said speeds of 1.4 terabits per second were achieved during their joint test - enough to send 44 uncompressed HD films a second. The test was conducted on a 410km (255-mile) link between the BT Tower in central London and Ipswich. However, it may be many years before consumers notice any effect. "BT and Alcatel-Lucent are making more from what they've got," explained Oliver Johnson, chief executive of broadband analyst firm point topic. "It allows them to increase their capacity without havi…

I'd be amazed if the SAS weren't there in some capacity but laying the blame at their door is unfair to say the least

Following my posting of a topic in News here yesterday concerning an e-petition there appears to be some doubters as to whether e-petitions are ever successful. Well the answer is yes, absolutely. The success of an e-petition can be measured in two ways, firstly by securing 100,000 signatures to prompt a Government debate, and secondly by achieving the aim of the petition. I know of several successful e-petitions and I'll share one of them now, a recent true story that did achieve it's aim: https://www.change.org/en-GB/petitions/pm-david-cameron-david-cameron-keep-your-promise-to-our-military-let-my-husband-have-his-pension?utm_source=action_alert&utm_medium=email&…
