A military dog captured by the Taliban and paraded on TV is British and went missing during an SAS mission that cost the life of a British soldier, Sky News understands. Early reports had suggested the dog, called Colonel, was from the US but sources in Washington have denied this. The dog was taken during an operation on December 23 last year east of Kabul. Captain Richard Holloway, 29, was killed during the mission. He was from the Royal Engineers Regiment but served with the SAS. Capt Holloway has been described by his commanding officer as a "natural leader", whose "tactical ability commanded wide respect". He added: "His judgement was un-erring, his enthusiasm w…

A substance-abuse counselor who drove 2 miles through a Los Angeles suburb with a dying man on her windshield was convicted Tuesday of second-degree murder, drunken driving and hit-and-run charges. Sherry Lynn Wilkins showed no response as the Superior Court jury returned with its verdict. Wilkins' blood-alcohol level was nearly twice the legal limit for driving when she struck 31-year-old Phillip Moreno in November 2012 in suburban Torrance, prosecutors said. Wilkins, 52, who was an addict before she became a drug and alcohol counselor, said she had been drinking that night but wasn't drunk. She said she had been 'self-medicating' while waiting for knee-replace…

Hi my name is Steve; I have been working in around and for police since 1994. You will know me as SBG on here. I want to tell you a story, mainly for the blokes on here but also for the woman so that they can tell men too. We all think when we are on the streets that we are going to get shot, stabbed or hurt in another way but the one thing that we never check is ourselves. We put our issue body armour on, cuffs baton and spray, hoping that we never have to use it. Deal with drugs, violence and abuse every day or just when we can, but what are protecting us and society from? I have lived a healthy-ish lifestyle, don't smoke, may be drink a little never used drugs ok a li…

My dad was one of the officers sent to this (from Sussex). He said he had never been so scared in his life (he was an ex serviceman as well, and had seen action in the Far East, so he was no shrinking violet), commenting on the absolute hatred shown by the miners to the police. I cant help agreeing that there are far more important things to be dedicating time to than something that happen all that time ago - the available pictures show the miners were no angels

The Sellafield nuclear reprocessing plant in Cumbria is partially closed after "a monitor detected an elevated level of activity". A spokesman said: "The decision has been taken to operate the site at reduced manning levels, commensurate with safe operations." The readings are "above the normal rating but below anything to cause us to take any action", he added. The company stressed there was no risk to the public or workforce. Part of the site is being cleared to allow detailed investigations, the spokesman said. Day personnel, agency staff and contractors have been told to stay at home. Other workers, including transport and utilities personnel, are working as nor…

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-25939908 Don't need to make it law, banning smoking in private vehicles would be almost impossible to enforce with so many cuts with police officers that are on the front line with crime cant see them wanting this on top as well.

http://edition.cnn.com/2014/01/27/world/meast/syria-homs-old-city-siege/index.html?hpt=hp_c1 (CNN) -- As nearly 600 days under siege sap the life and dignity out of the Old District in the Syrian city of Homs -- leaving malnourished men with legs like noodles and soot-stained children to dig through homes turned into rubble for bits of firewood -- diplomats in a picturesque Swiss city bicker over aid. "The situation is unbearable and inhuman. Food, there is none. Medical supplies, there is none. Milk for children, there is none. It is beyond words." Mohammed Abu Yahay tells CNN through a crackly Skype connection. Diplomats at the Geneva II peace negotiations in the …
