Hello all, Please excuse the ignorance here but this is a serious question. Looking at the deal purely from a cold factual position I wanted to get the opinion of Specials. Given that you receive zero pay, little in the way of rewards or benefits and actively put yourselves in potentially dangerous positions every time you don the uniform, why do you choose to do it and why is it so over subscribed? Just so you all dont go running away with the wrong idea - I've applied to be a Special and I have my own reasons why - none of which my family or friends understand. I just wanted to get a feel for why others do it? Like I said this is a serious question - please don't …

...where would you choose and why? I have two ideal postings, very different in their style and issues but both in the same vein: New York Police Department and Los Angeles Police Department. The individual forces I have chosen because of the breadth of specialisms available and the areas patrolled but in general it is US policing which I like in many ways, that is NOT to say that it doesn't have many disadvantages and pitfalls! Why? - Greater feeling of policing being a vocation. - Better equipment and expectation for the force to protect its officers - Respect given to POs - General ability to identify oneself as a PO off duty without fear of reprisals or discipli…

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01p242t/Police_Elections_2012_08_11_2012/ it lasts around 30 mins so watch it when you have some time. it is a fairly interesting look at the PCC elections if anyone is interested. I placed it in general discussions as it's not really news! I also included a poll just for interests sake. I have made it non public to allow serving officers to vote freely.

I'm interested to know what different forces have as their assessment day pass marks for: 1. Specials 2. Regulars. For instance to pass Surrey's SEARCH assessment centre you need to achieve 60%. In Hampshire however, it's 50%. What's your forces pass mark?

G'morning folks... I just got in the door after a 3.30am finish (from a ridiculously quiet shift) to my comfy, warm and welcoming home. The body is knackered but the brain screams Go-Go-Go, Grade1-drop-everything-and-zoom-to-it. Grrrr.... As it's the weekend I'm having a lovely cold Tyskie while watching a bad news channel (isn't that new Xmas advert by John Lewis damn good?!?) Thankfully no work tomorrow or Sunday, just a day of International rugby on the telly and some rare junk food, Asda Singapore noodles mmmm :-) The question is - how do YOU wind down after a late(ish) shift? (by the way, I heard the Wales got battered by Samoa tonight - no highlights yet tho... …

"If you live in an old house you are likely to have walls inside the house of varying degrees of quality. You will also know that a good quality heavyweight wallpaper can cover up a whole multitude of sins. Unlike a modern house with its paper thin stud walls that can be covered in emulsion and look very tidy the older wall can be covered in surface cracks and in places quite crumbly. Sometimes you are not aware of the state of the wall behind and only when you come to redecorate does the sorry state of the plaster behind reveal itself. It can be a shock to discover and could be quite expensive to correct." First paragraph only, so that I am not depriving @TheCustodySgt …

have been given an unconditional offer by John Moore University to study Policing, however, they have asked me to make sure that I am eligible to become a police officer as obviously that is the point of the course and you are required to work for them whilst at University. When I was 12-13 years old, I went to a persons house with a friend who was bullying us. I knocked on the door, asked him why he was bullying us both and my friend ended up hitting him a few times. I was excluded from school, as too was my friend, I was told it was for "aiding and abetting the fight". I was also required to complete 2 hours community service. The kids parents didn't press charges …

Yesterday I left my mobile unattended to be charged up in a class at college , however on two ocassions I have left my seat and come back to see that somebody seems to have (for a laugh.... not so funny in my eyes however) unlocked my phone and made emergency calls. Now on both ocassions , it shows as Emergency Call but "Call ended". Can I ask.... What happens now? Will I be potentially banned from making calls to Emergency Services from my number? or will the Police be "in touch". This morning however one friend comes up to me to say she's recieved a phone call stating that her voice was recognised in the background of the calls yesterday and it's been matched with th…

I recently posted, though the responses are unclear. Basically, I was 12 years old, i knocked on a guys door after school and a friend hit him a few times (childish, i know) for bullying us both in school. The day after we were called to the police officers office in school, and handed a 3 day exclusion and 2 hours community service in the summer. I didnt attend court nor did his parents press charges against us. The school police officer "doubts" he put this on the National Police Database, but said that he is unsure. If it turns out that he did enter the information onto the database, will a juvenile aiding and abetting caution prevent me becoming a special/police o…

I've not seen this discussed anywhere. Can someone explain to me what the implications are regarding business interests. http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2012/1961/contents/made The home office doc seems to say it's just to clarify the process that's already in place but i read it a bit differently.
