I'm approaching being let loose with my tutor soon and I wanted some advice from the many experienced and lovely guys and gals on PS.com I've got a reasonable amount of holiday allowance left up (15 days for the rest of this calendar year) and I'm thinking about taking 5 days to go out policing with my shift. I can see some good benefits to this, I'll get to experience some varied midweek stuff rather than just Saturday nights, will rack up some decent hours to help find my feet and will perhaps assimilate myself in the team a bit more if I'm there for 7 days or so. I guess there are some negatives too. I might never want to go back to my day job I'll be using valuab…

Hi, The provisions under s59 Police Reform Act 2002 and s126 Anti Social Behaviour (S) Act 2004 appear to be identical to each other, albeit it's hard to find the specific legislation wording for the 126 offence online. Both offences require a warning to be issued prior to seizing the vehicle when an offence is committed under either s3 or s34 RTA. Question is, and I assume the answer is no, can a warning issued under s59 be used to enact the seizure of a vehicle under s126 and vice versa? Any opinions or facts in relation to this, strongly welcomed. Ta! PS- Mods, while I appreciate this should come under 'It's the law' there is no section specific to national law,…

Ok, hopefully just a quick one... I don't want this to be a topic about when/how/why anyone should or should not get involved off duty, and this is purely an academic question.... or two... 1) Does a special hold their police powers at all times, or just when on duty? 2) What legal powers does a special have specifically, when off duty? ie PACE? 3) Do specials have UK wide powers, or just in their home county? If someone can point me in the direction of the law and sections ect that would be great! Thanks!

While the news of Paris Brown and Sergeant Jeremy Scott is still hot off of the presses, I thought it the right time to discuss the use of social media amongst nationwide police. In a fast-evolving online world that shows no slowing, and the fact that 50% of the UK's population has a Facebook account alone, how much will police officers and staff have to censor 'whats on their mind' in fear of sanctions and public outcry? While official police social media pages (such as NPT teams) have their uses, is there any room for police officers to express their personal views online without being sacked and ridiculed? This links into online police blogs and their current situation…

That time of year again and my application form has just landed in my tray... despite saying I don't want to be a Skipper any time soon the options are such that I'm hoping to at least bank it even if I don't use it, so will be sitting Part 1 the beginning of next year. So how did people study? What books/CDs/courses did you go on? I've got my Blackstones on order through Training Dept and will go pick them up next week, but I can't just read Blackstones cover to cover, I need something more.... well, something more! Any advice please? (Anyone else taking it this year..?)

Hi Everyone Anyone have their assessment for GMP this Saturday? I was at the Recruitment Evening on 15th January & applied a week later. Was told in early March I'd passed the application stage, then received an invitation for the assessment day a couple of weeks ago. How did everyone do? Anyone with any advice for me it would be much appreciated! Cheers Ash

If a member of the public finds for example £200 laying in the street and hands it in to the Police. If nobody claims it within 28 days then are they entitled to it? What is after 28 days someone the owner then tries to claim it?

I'm currently going through the recruitment process and have thought of a couple of scenarios which at present would not cause me much concern, but when or if (best not count my chickens) I become a special, would it would put a different slant on things? This relates only to people close to me, the ones you wouldn't want to act any differently around you: 1) I'm out for an evening with a close friend/relative for 4 hours. We eat/chat etc and over the course or the evening he/she consumes say 3 pints of beer. On saying goodbye that person then drives home. They are a mature, informed and not reckless individual. Other than asking them if they are OK to drive, I would not…

I've just been reading about the Royal Household Cavalry and some of their preparations for major events, such as the forthcoming Diamond Jubilee and how difficult it is to prepare for the conditions they will be facing. Apparently some of them will be on parade for more than four hours, not including waiting time and stand-down time. It's also difficult to predict exact weather conditions. So, potentially five hours during which they can't exercise or stretch their limbs, can't carry bottles of water to re-hydrate themselves and can't leave their positions for a toilet-break. That must be horrendous and I'm sure some of them must experience some real discomfort, especia…

How many times do you see cars being driven with FOG LIGHTS on when they are blatantly not being used for the purpose? It seems that some especially sporty type vehicle drivers have a compulsion to use them even in broad day light! Do you stop them and 'have words' these days?

Hi all.. Can anyone tell me if it is possible for me to work abroad for 5-6 months and still apply to the Police? Would this count as not being at an address and therefore void my application? Thanks in advance. T
