Just wonder if anyone has any experience - personal or otherwise - of going from a substantive Sergeant to a DC or DS post, with no prior Detective background. I'm a T/Sgt and always wanted to follow the Detective career-pathway, however I'm conscious of closing off career options too early on. I haven't completed the NIE or ICIDP and whilst I know our policy says Sgt's and Insp's can make the swap to DS or DI I've never seen it happen since all the job adverts require PIP2 and NIE etc as essential on application. Anyone ever done it..?

I have had a look through a few different acts to try find a answer to this, but unable to find a answer. Is there anything that allows a off duty/non uniformed constable or anyone higher to stop a vehicle/request the driver to pull over that has already stopped at a set of traffic lights if so what under what circumstances are they able to do so.

Hi folks. Apologies for naivety, but do BTP have Detectives (CID) within their ranks - I'm non-police by the way hence the question. Thanks...

I am keen to learn what items are regularly stolen for scrap in your force area. We have problems with Cat convertors, manhole covers and railway parts in our area. I am particularly keen to hear about items which officers struggled to identify initially.

So I'd like to say that I'm close to gaining IPS. Just wondered whether anyone had any tips or things to point out that may be useful for someone who's about to or recently become independent? One thing I'm told is good to do, is just get out and walk around town on your own and get used to being on your own. Good advice or not? Thoughts? Much appreciated.

Hey. Recently I have been given (with rather alarming frequency) what my supervisors like to refer to as "quick turnovers". I call them something else entirely. What are the actual official rules on shifts? How long is there supposed to be between one shift finishing and the next starting? And is there a maximum number of days one is supposed to work in a row without a rest day? I would really appreciate it if anyone was able to link to something that sets this out in writing, ie something from the Fed. I've googled and googled myself, but cannot find anything. And before anyone says "that's life in a blue one" etc etc, of course I understand that policing is never goin…

Just saw an article linking to a page on Gov.uk website, about time off work for public duties: https://www.gov.uk/time-off-work-public-duties However, why are specials not included I have to ask?!

I have to go to court for the first time in a few weeks. There will be myself and several other regular officers there. I've known about it for a while, but I'm starting to get a bit more nervous as its draws closer. Has anyone got any advice for me? Without going into too much detail, at an incident I turned up to, three PCs were assaulted, which resulted in one male being arrested. I'm just worried I'll do or say something wrong. I work with these PCs all the time so I just don't want to let anyone down.

Well, if course it does. We have them in The Met. However, there doesn't seem to be any allowance for the rank of Commander in Police Regulations: http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2003/527/regulation/4/made

"Reassurance" seems to be something of a buzz-word at the moment. But what is it and since when did people need "reassuring" constantly? It all strikes me as rather meaningless - "we can't actually do anything but we can 'reassure' you". Whenever we have a critical incident or potentially high-profile one officers are ordered out in yellow jackets to stand about providing "reassurance". The thing is, I've never met anyone ever who is actually "reassured" but this: if anything it raises the profile of the incident even more and people feel less secure and more worried. Lincolnshire are now recruiting volunteer PCSOs and one of their main roles will be "reassurance" (http…
