If you stop someone driving not in accordance you have the power to ticket/report. It is a 60 pounds fine and 3 points. However, I've heard some people say that if they are guilty of this then they automatically don't have insurance...and, as such, can be given a 200 pounds fine (FPN). Now, while I see the logic to this I don't think this is correct....for a few of reasons: 1. They have taken out an insurance policy, so at the end of the day they have paid for the policy and it's listed on the PNC/MIB &c. - it's not for us to judge when policies would be honoured &c. or if a company would pay out. Okay, seeing as the chicken example has gone down so well, here's another. I am in a supermarket and I pick up a bag of grapes, I fully intend to pay for said grapes, but I get the munchies and eat a few of the grapes on my way round to the checkout where I then pay for goods including the grapes. Have I committed theft?...(there will be alot of people on here who know the answer to this)..

Lets say someone is selling pirated dvd's on the market, and someone runs past and grabs a handful. A copper sees this happen, and collars the thief. It is then found out that the discs are pirated... would the thief still be charged with theft? A similar example.... a copper or mop sees someone steal something from someone standing around on the street. The thief is caught, and it turns out the thing he stole was heroin. Could he be charged with theft of something that is illegal? Or would he be charged with something else, or nothing at all?

A question for someone with a bit of trivial traffic knowledge! A car is driving along the road displaying a rear L-Plate. The driver is alone, no passenger. As the good cops we are we wonder if they are indeed a full licence holder. The car is stopped and the driver is spoken to. He confirms he is a full licence holder, this is verified and all other documentation is in order. However, does he commit an offence of driving with an L plate despite not being a learner driver being supervised? You're called to a shop where the security guard has detained a shoplifter. The shoplifter is left in the back office, whilst the security guard meets you at the front door and explains what has happened. On entering the back office, you ask the security guard to repeat his accusation in the hearing of the alleged shoplifter, after which you make the arrest. In this scenario, why do you need to get the security guard to make his accusation in the shoplifter's presence? In fact, do you need to do so at all? 1 - Car parks, such as Tesco, ASDA, B&Q etc, often have these small zebra crossings on them. Is a failure to adhere to these a breach of the RTA? Hi, I'm interested in other peoples opinions on harassment notices and whether they are issued a bit too liberally now?? This time last year my ex was threatening me, insulting me and generally not a very nice person, at the time I received around 20 text messages a day, I spoke to the police and they gave him call and told him to stop it or they'd arrest him. What amounts to 'disorderly conduct', when the charge is drunk and disorderly, and how does it differ from disorderly conduct for an offence contrary to section 5? For example (hypothetical): A member of the public is approached in a random 'stop and search' situation. He knows he has committed no crime. There is nobody else around. Evening all, Not really a policing question, more that I thought someone on here might know. I bought a car on Saturday, tax ran out today. I have the MOT certificate, a valid insurance certificate and the little slip for the new keeper from the log book. I have some recollection of being told if i have these things I can get it taxed at the post office without waiting for the entire log book to arrive, is this correct??

You are on duty and pull a driver for using a mobile telephone. you do not have any £60 EFPNs to hand. can you report the driver for the offence of driving without due care and attention or using a mobile telephone whilst driving? 2. you are off duty and see a driver using a mobile telephone. can you record the vehicle/driver details at the time and issue a Notice of Intended Prosecution to the R/O for the offence? ...not that i love tickets, but i hate people that chat and drive...

I'm just trying to understand the practical scenarios for the application of this legislation. Specifically Subsection 1 & 4. So I foresee the standard situation, you turn up to a pub and in the first instance let's deal with a drunk and separately the same scenario by someone sober and disorderly (as the legislation uses the word "or").
