Last night (24/1/16) following a security alert in Lurgan, Co. Armagh, police came under attack with over 100 petrol bombs and were fired upon by a masked gunman. Apologies for the ungrammatical thread title but I wanted to sum up the MPS's new policy in a succinct way. Its led to a lot of debate on the Police Oracle news pages as well as on other forums with what seems like the majority of people disagreeing with it and commenting that it is positive discrimination to favour foreign or BME candidates, that its unnecessary, or that it panders to people who should really be able to speak English. Personally I think that its a back door way of starting positive discrimination to recruit more officers from minority groups. A series of police failings "may have impacted" on the death of a man who swallowed drugs after he was arrested, the police watchdog has found. Jan McLean was held on suspicion of drugs offences on 12 August 2013 and taken to Guildford police station. He collapsed in custody and was taken to hospital but died two days later. Bedfordshire 2 hours ago Police stopped the van near J9 of the M1 Drugs with an estimated street value of £2m were recovered from a van on the M1 in Bedfordshire, police said. About 40kg (88lbs) of what is believed to be class A drugs were found in the Ford Connect van stopped by police near junction nine at 12:15 GMT on Tuesday. The experienced counter-terrorism officer was injured by a machine used to cut up seized weaponry at a force facility in July 2014, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) said.
