A woman in her 80s has died after being shot by a fellow octogenarian resident at a care home in Essex, police have said. Police have begun a murder inquiry and a man has been arrested on suspicion of murder. Police said the victim and the alleged assailant were residents in the home. Officers were called to De La Mer House care home in Naze Park Road, Walton-on-the-Naze, at about 09:00 GMT after reports a woman was seriously injured. Three police forces who looked at handing over their 999 control rooms to the private sector have decided not to go ahead with a deal. Police in Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Northamptonshire will instead form a "strategic alliance" to coordinate their work. A man who "pulled the trigger" when confronting officers was holding an imitation firearm, said police. Officers were threatened in Preston after they stopped a car while investigating an assault on Tuesday. Lancashire Police said the officers saw "what appeared to be a handgun", but it did not fire. A 29-year-old man from St. Helens has been charged with possessing an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of unlawful violence.
